My boyfriend has a 10 gallon tank with a dojo loach and a white cloud mountain minnow. Both have been in that tank for at least two years. He is tired of taking care of the fish and wants to take the tank down. I have a 10 gallon with 3 white clouds so I would happily take his fish, but His minnow has it's mouth stuck open. It has been like this for about 3 months. The fish is not less active or anything. I am wondering what it has and if I should deviate from taking it in. I would hate to infect my tank. (we found a home for the dojo too)
Thanks!
Stephanie

I've heard about this, in oscars, but I'm not sure if its the same thing. If it is it will not affect any of the other fih, but jus to be sure wait for someone who knows more about this kinda stuff soz.

P.S. As well as takin the minnow, you could take his tank if he doesn't want it !!

Well, if the fish had rockitis (a rock stuck in his throat), he would have been dead by now.

If the fish had some kind of infection causing it, I'd say ditto.

If it is a tumor or mass, then it is not likely to be transmissible.

That leaves a dislocated jaw as suggested above. I've seen an oscar with a dislocated jaw and half of it hung open.

My recommendation is to live and let live unless you see him losing weight and emmaciating, at which time I would humanely euthanize. However, I'd let him live as long as he could the way he is. Your tank will just have a special fish in it.

With larger fish, we would look into the mouth for an obstruction, then try to yank it out with tweezers, or push it out through the gills. On such a tiny fish, this would be very hard.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I've decided to take him in and I'm sure he'll be happy to have some friends again.
Thanks again!!
