i went on business for 5 days. when i returned, one of my bettas tanks was covered in white, thick, stringy stuff. just at the surface of the water. my other tank was fine. they have the exact same routine. weekly 100% water changes. the bettas get the same food. the tanks get the same light, draft, have the same temp everything. my parents were taking care of it, and i trust them. so i dont understand what it could be. i wanted to take a pic, but i didnt have a camera.
oh yeah, my betta was dead too.
and now, i noticed when cleaning my live bettas tank, there was the white stuff begining on one of his plants.
any idea what this is?

The only "stuff" that I know of that fits your description is fungus...

If it covered the top of the water in one tank the Betta suffocated.

Where the fungus came from in that volume may be a mystery unless a whole bunch of fish food was placed in the tank
and it fungused.
