Gang,

DM, better know as Depeche Mode, just recently released a new album for their 25th anniversary. I don’t want to rave how good (or bad) this release is, instead I would like to indulge you with a tale from long ago ().

Almost exactly 23 years ago, on December 4th of 1982 (also my 20th birthday), I went to my first Depeche Mode concert. That’s right, at a time when over 50% of our FP regulars have not even been born . If I am not mistaken then this was Depeche Mode’s first tour outside of England. It was just amazing; we were about 150 people at the gym of my hometown university in Germany (and just a few years later they filled the Pasadena Rose Bowl Arena for their 101 Tour. It was a time when “the broader music audience” was concerned that electronic music will replace conventional instruments.

It was just a wonderful concert, the tape machine was getting center stage and Dave Gahan (the singer) had to stop it after each song and restart it when the next song was to be “interpreted”. Keyboards were not as sophisticated as today and couldn’t store all the different rhythms, so they came from the tape.

As to the way I was at that time: well, I drove a white Volkswagen Golf GTI with white leather seats, I had a haircut similar to Dave Gahan (and I danced like him as well), I was wearing leg warmers (uh, that was very hip), and the music style “New Wave” was the greatest thing on earth (other representatives of that style included Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, and Japan).

I want to close my tale with a line from the latest record:

When your lips touch mine – And I lose control – I forget I’m old – And dying

Ingo

Ah, back in the days when we still had enough hair to "style". Now there's only enough to use a razor. The only other style option open to us is a future "sweepover"

Must admit I never really liked DM.Resisted the New Romance thing for as long as I could. I hung onto my punk roots as long as possible , The Jam , The Clash et al. They are still on my iPod. Yep I refuse to grow old gracefully.

I do remember seeing a bunch of young lads playing every Sunday in the alleyway of the Dandelion Market (long gone)in Dublin. Funny name - U2, wonder whatever happened to those guys

GFG – Just voted, thanks for the link, I didn't know we have a poll about them

Bensaf – Yeah, the old days. And boy, did I have styles - anything from shoulder length perm over short and blue-black to orange bleached. I was soooo handsome .

I hate to make you guys feel even older but I grew up listening to all of that. You sound exactly like my mother, Bensaf. She's 41, would be close to your age. I wasn't around in 82 yet, born in 84 (good considering that my mom was 19 when she had me ).

I have inherited a lot of my parents' taste in music, you'd find The Clash on my iPod if I had one. At least my mother and I can agree on music, most of the time.

The Clash is good -- but the Ramones...now that's music!

Trys, my child, let me educate you a little.

See, just about the worse thing an attractive young woman can say to a man my age is that he's old enough to be your mother !! To say I sound like her too, just compounds it.

I woke up this morning all fresh and happy, listened to The Jam in the car on the way to work, trying to pogo in the back seat, the driver probably thought I was having a seizure. Generally feeling good about the world and life.

Then I read that and feel old and weary. I'll go out at lunch time to buy a Zimmer frame and fill up the iPod with Perry Como classics. All of a sudden a toupe seems like a good idea. Suddenly I'm feeling twinges in my back, and seem to have twice as much grey hair as I did yesterday. I guess I can throw out my jeans and T-shirts and go buy some baggy polyester pants and a few nice wooly cardigans. See if I can get someone to make me a rocking chair. I'll have to start making statements like "you young folk don't know how easy you have it, back when I was a lad I had to get up at 5 in the morning, go work for 5 hours down the coal mine, then walk to school barefoot over broken glass, and be caned 3 times a day by the teacher. You could go to the cinema and buy a candied apple and still have change from a penny, ah those were the days"

See what you've done !

Gee,

Rather interesting how my “Old Man’s Tale” turned into Bensaf’s self assessment

And with regards to “old” Irish bands, rather then U2 I loved to (and still do) listen to the Pogues and in particular Thin Lizzy. Man, that was good music!

Hmm it's funny... When people were going 'new wave' and listening to Depeche Mode and U2 ect.... I was a die hard 'longhaired punk' listening to heavy metal, thrash and some punk.. I was in bands and had my guitar with me constantly, in a band too.. It was fun times.

Now I can honestly say depeche mode is pretty good.

Definately a U2 fan now. Just had to develop my musical ear...

*Legwarmers on guys* - some lines should just never be crossed !

Still listen to alot of heavy stuff & punk is still cool, if not entertaining Fun to jam to.

Time to sharpen me axe !
