Hmmm I remember oregon trail...it was fun to make the people spin around in a circle shooting things

Back on "topic"...Even though my younger sisters are older (ones graduating HS in *looks at calander* way too short of a time) than some of our regular members I'd still feel odd for them to be seeing some of the stuff that gets talked about in chat...which is why I try and keep my comments, when they do approach lines, more on the side of safe rather than sorry. Even if it's about a natural process that created each and everyone of us I've seen way too many people refering to specific video files in a way that I really didn't appreaciate.

No wonder they come on FP, educational video games are boring......Except for Oregon Trail.......and Reader Rabbit.......

What do parents say to you when their kids ask them if they can chat about fish online with us?

Actually yesterday KTS asked me if she could log onto fp to read and she did a couple of post during our half-group time (tutoring), instead of playing some of the other games...not to mention daddio who comes on when he can, and I have 2 other kiddos that I need to get ahold of their parents and get permission and information from to sign them up...it's really amazing that yes, there are still young children (sorry kiddos) that would rather come here and read/post than play some of the educational computer games...And we won't talk about today when I tried to get on during half-group:%) I ended up with my half-group; all 6 of them crowded around me to see and read what I was reading

So thanks Nick for steering us back on topic...but yes, there are kiddos that come on and enjoy it

ms. laird

PS I don't want any of us to be the ones explaining where babies come from in detail, but for the kids to watch their fish be able to have fry is wonderful to experience...KTS calls me when one of her wonderful little ladies drops fry, and we get excited together

So again kiddos, welcome to the site, make sure that you have your momma's, daddy's, teacher's, whoever's permission, and have fun...we are here to keep you safe and sound...we love (or at least I love) ya'll...ms. laird....aka heidi

Several ten year old members/semi-members have been mentioned in this thread. I wonder what motivates these kids to hang around? When I was ten, you wouldn't find me doing research of any kind, or doing anything educational.

What? If I'd had this place to visit when I was 10 years old, and net access at home, I'd have signed up like a flash. I had to make do with library books.

In fact, I'd probably have filled Photo Booth with pics of my fish. As in:

Pic 1 : Glowlights shoaling

Pic 2 : Glowlights shoaling again

Pic 3 : Zebra Danios shoaling

Pic 4 : Zebra Danios shoaling again

...

Pic 5,973 : Thomasi in its cave

Pic 5,974 : Thomasi playing with the Skunk Loaches

Pic 5,975 ...

You get the idea.

Furthermore, several people have suggested to me that my Pandas would make good material for children's books. Some of them from here. A notion that I would have pursued more assiduously were it not for the fact that the market has been well and truly swamped by Nemo and others.

I wouldn't pay $9 to see catfish making love on the big screen. That's just wrong.

... you're freakin' the normal people out.

Read what Heidi wrote above. She's a teacher, and makes her living addressing child safety issues. She had no problem with my posts. She understood that [1] the initial post was partly in jest, and [2] the follow up argument I presented afterwards would be familiar to any parent or would be parent.

Furthermore, several people have suggested to me that my Pandas would make good material for children's books. Some of them from here. A notion that I would have pursued more assiduously were it not for the fact that the market has been well and truly swamped by Nemo and others.

"Mommy, where do babies come from?"

Call me crazy but I don't think I would want some random 40-something year old guy on the internet giving my kids (if I had them) answers to that question. Maybe it's just me but that image is very disturbing.

Anyway.... Shawntel and welcome to the site.

Must agree with Cali, I'd rather them learn slowly and with us guiding them than on their own I've seen too many teen pregnancies to count, and feel even some of my 3rd graders know way too much about what they shouldn't at this age...Now take into account one of our other younger members KTS she's learning the birds and the bees from [link=her guppies]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Livebearers%20Lane/59233.html" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] instead of from the others at her grade level...and so far she is doing great with her babies...As long as we don't get graphic as to what goes on, there is no harm in it.

]:|it sure beats them listening to 50 cents song Candy Shop, and learning from it]:|

Just my thoughts, and hey if JellyBean or Shawntal wants to do penpals with someone I'm sure KTS and daddio would love to as well, let me know and I can help arrange it before school is out...heidi michelle

Here is another reason FP is additive I guess, I have just found out by accident that my newly adopted 10 yr old granddaughter has been going on the site, checking and has even been lurking on the chat.
This is pretty much how the conversation went last night.

Me – “ Shawntel what are you doing, homework I hope”

Shawntel—“No, I am looking at one of your sites on fishes, What is a Fallout, and sirbooks, and what type of fish is a babelfish, This is not one of the bad sites you don’t want me to see, is it papa”

“No Shawntel it is one of the good sites, I have no problem, with you visiting this site, it’s one of the good ones.
And a Fallout is a man who looks after the site, and loves bare feet.

A sirbooks is also a young man who has just be promoted to look after the site and looks like Chaci from Happy Days.

And a babelfish is a young lady who helps people with fish questions and has a lot of knowledge on taking really good pictures., and is the queen of the chat room.”

Shawntel---“ I know she is in the chat room A lot, she is there every time I go there."

Me—“ So you go onto the site a lot more than you told me
And you watch the chat room, Maybe we should start to look at the site together from now on."

Shawntel--- Ya I guess so, sorry.

So anyway guys If you see Tommyc lurking not saying to much it could be my Angel.
Just caught me funny, wanted to share.
Tom

Joe, kids are always curious when animals or fish have offspring. And if you handle the introduction with due sensitivity, it helps develop nurturing instincts that will be vital when they're grown up and thinking about offspring of their own. I'm sure Heidi (as a teacher) will agree that a properly paced course of learning about such things is a LOT better than ignorance.

Anyway, my baby Pandas are cute. Someone should make stuffed toys in the shape of Panda Corys.

Ain't she a little young for that, Cali? I don't think it is quite time for the-birds-and-the-fishes speech yet...

Now that would be sweet. Parent and child chatting in the room together. At least then you'd have none of the worries that usually accompany kids and chat rooms!

Someday Tommy you'll have to introduce us to Shawntel. Then she can find out about Bayou's psychotic Chipokae, my Pandas and their frenetic baby making, Heidi's kamikaze bubble wall bombing habrosus and other delights
