I only have the room to keep horses heads right now. A full horse would be good one day.

I have an arab mare that I really don't ride anymore- darn work. She is fine with that though- she thinks I am her carrot bearing valet. And Callatya- she even has a plain name- her name is Hannah. Although her original name was KFA Omega. However as she is not a spaceship, I thought Hannah suited her better.

Yep...the poor mare we boarded had a sheet on her, in the barn, when it was 85degrees!!
That's the sad thing about horse people, though. A few of the really physco riders give us all bad names, and people who don't know the horse world think that all of us are that way. *sigh*
I don't know about you guys, but here in New england, we've had insane amounts of rain, and I've only ridden five times in the past three months! (sadly, I don't have an indoor, and my arena is right in the sun, so I don't like to ride when its 90 out!)Stowie's gettin fat and lazy....lol.

fairynr that's the problem I had with alot of pleasure riders. It was all about the looks and not the horse. If the horse isn't perfect go out in 90F weather and lope it for 3hours. While the reining and gaming riders are standing in the shade sharing lemonades with their horses and keeping a bucket of water handy for the pleasure horses that went down from heat exhaustion. It happened at least once a year. Anything to win. The one girl never took the blanket off her horse year round cause he might get dirty or ruin his coat. One day her horse was covered in blisters. My former friend was actually happy when the horse died belonging to her biggest competitor. My new friends all stood around cheering everyone on even their competition. Alot of the trainers would start the young pleasure horses doing circles when they were yearlings. I saw lots of cracked hocks in the pleasure circuit. They just couldn't handle the stress but noone seemed to either realize or care about the horses. I don't start running my barrel horses till at least 3years old. The reining and gaming riders I've met just have a better attitude about their horses and showing. It's not who's the best at any cost it's more who can get their horse to enjoy their job and rider so much that they put on a good show. While I'm not saying it's true for everyone that rides pleasure it was too common for me to deal with anymore.

Thanks Callatya! I think that stowie's all throughbred, but I don't know (he is a free lease for life, and i haven't seen his papers. He is an interesting horse, he was a circut jumper, jumped the big stuff..lol. Then he came to his "owner" *sigh* then to me, so I'm not quite sure about his backround, besides that.)
As a matter of fact, Mufassa (the bay w/out the star) was on the racetrak, but he wasn't fast enough. When he came to us he was completely spacey, and it took my mother a VERY long time to work him out of his flighty nature. But the turnout helped alot, and has also helped my mom's new horse. She was flighty also, but after only a few weeks of being able to run (she was in a barn all day long before we got her]:|) she's calmed right down. For some reason my mom likes the challenge horses

Ohh, I LOVE reining, it looks wonderful!

Nice ponies Fairy, thats one BIG blaze for a TB! are you sure thats all he has in him? I love the dark bays!

I actually have some good news on this front, I secured a ride for next show season and PC AND better still, the ability to retrain and eventually compete on my latest beau, Johnny

He is a real hottie - raced hard, and left at the doggers because of a leg injury. He is a real gem, chestnut, wavy mane, 3 white socks and an arab style tail. He is going to make a wonderful event horse, just as soon as we get over the whole fear of humans/fly like the wind racehorse attitude
He has been at grass for a few months after the last training attempt (which was a bit fast for him apparently, he really needs slow and steady) so he should be ready for attention again He *loved* his grooming session today

AND i think I might have FINALLY found an old enough saddle to fit my riding style THANK GOODNESS! I was beginning to think i'd have to ride bareback for the rest of my days!

i wish!

as kitten knows, i am a horse freak

before i moved, i used to sit on top of a hill and watch the gorses eat, i was perfectly fine watching them do their own thing, and sure i love riding too, but even if i can just hook up a lead rope, and walk them arounfd outside of a fence, letting them ge some grass, im just fine with that...i have fallen for a few horses in my life so far there was a pony i rode english on (yup, with all the snooty people) and we used to have some great convos, but i quit riding english because when my fav instructor went back to school, i got stuck with the owner of the stable...and i was sick of being ordered what to do] to i quit. not long later, she sold the stable, and took 3 horses with her when she moved.

the next one i remember was aztech and he is still my baby he was just a realy special pony, its hard to explain.

and now my current love, it duke, he is a black percheron, heres a pic of him Duke

Srry guys...my internet connection was lost all last night and today
nice horse Callatya! You're right....too much ground work is just...too much

The only problem I have with horse people are the people who leave their horses in a barn all day, to keep their coats short. ]:| Can't horses be horses?? At my house, we have 12 acres of fields so our horses can run all day long. I know that most people cannot do this, and have to board them, but can't they atleast let their horses out for a few hours??
Recently, my ferrier knew of a girl who HAD to have her horse boarded. Her last barn kicked her out(that should have been the warning sign for us) and she needed a place to keep her horse. Long story short, we had an extra stall in our barn, and she came. She was a western pleasure person, and did many shows. So, the horse had to be in all day long, and have artificial light from five in the morning to nine at night. We said no to this-our horses needed their sleep! But the poor mare(who was a beautiful dun) had to be in all day long, while our horses frolicked in our 12-acre fields! Plus, when the girl would ride, she used four-inch spurs(the western spike ones!) and just kicked the poor animal all the time! I use spurs because I have to(my lazy horse is incredibly god at ignoring me), but mine are only little knobs of metal to serve as a reminder of my prescence. I couldn't believe the way she rode. And...to make things worse....the mother of the owner actually had the nerve to tell me that I had to clean my horse's stall at that time. I clean them at night, but she thought she could tell me to clean them then...
I sure there are many people who ride western who are wonderful and talented, but from what I've seen, it is all a fashion show.(to quote sham) The girl, for her "showmanship" walked her horse around, stopped it, trotted with hr alittle, then turned her around. That was her competition, and I asked "What do they judge you on"....she said, "how I look and how my horse looks" It was hard for me to take anything she said seirously after that...
Sorry, my post is long

I have 8 horses with 3 bred this year. I breed quarter horses and some paints as well as do training. I'm in college right now for a 2year associate of science degree in barn management and breeding. I got tired of the western pleasure politics. It's all a fashion show. Most of the horses I've seen just did their job all spaced out and didn't even enjoy it or seem aware of what was going on and most of the riders can be quite the snobs. I started doing barrels and gaming instead. Cara made Iowa state champion in barrels but she ripped her flexor tendon and is now bred for her 2nd foal. She's probably the best trail horse I've had the pleasure of adventuring on and I hope to get some equally nice babies. If the path ran out Cara made her own no matter where it led us but never into any trouble we couldn't get out of. I'm also getting into reining horses and have 2 nice reining mares both by Docs Malbec bred to foal next year.

I don't have a horse, but I can definitely see that some people around here are a bit snooty who have horses. Especially people who show horses and spend all their time with it (I also knew someone who showed alpacas, and she was the same way). And they don't have much horse sense either... I shadowed a vet twice and both times we saw the same horse. The first time he legitimately had an infection. The second time, they called because he was just eating the grain part off the hay they were feeding him (well of course he did, that's the good part! - plus he was 25, not going to bother with the straw). The vet was telling me how people like this will call him if their horse so much as sneezes and most the time there'll be nothing wrong with them. (of course, less around here because most people have money to burn, but I'm sure some places, people never have a vet see their horse, which is just as bad).

I've also met horse-owning people who are really nice. Particularly farmers with work horses.

My brother now wants to get a horse (eventually) that can carry armor and himself wearing armor so he can do medieval warfare demonstrations on horseback. He's already got swords, chain mail, and a helm... he's just stuck to demonstrating these things on foot.

I like horses, can't afford to have one (especially around here).

I am still in a place with a lot of young teen girls, and even the nice sensible ones have what i reckon is a protective bitchy streak in order for them to survive til they are 20 and all the not-so-dedicated ones leave

There are nice ones, they just take some finding

I am VERY nice.

I'm SO NICE in fact that when 3 'helful' 13yo riding students butchered my pony's precious mane with a pair of scissors and then point blank denied it to the stable owner while standing in a pile of black hair, I'm SO NICE that i just made a passing comment that if they could possibly ask the person who did do it to never do it again without asking me first.

an our of mane pulling and a week of moisurising my hands, and the heatbreak of a 3" mane on an arab, I was practically overflowing with kindness I think!

*practices her Ibn's*

why can't they call Arab's sensible names? Like Brad or Fynn?

I do admit that some horse people are snotty and it's found in both English and Western disciplines. It's unfortunate that you haven't met any of us nice ones yet. The horse people I socialize with are all very nice people and put the horses welfare first. The lady who owns the barn has been in the "horse" business for 40+ years. She's my walking horsey enclycopedia! Quite a few seem to think that because they have a horse in the back yard they know all there is to know about horses (and their poor horse is skin and bones and full of worms-I've been helping my barn owner retrain some of these horses after we've gotten them healthy). It's unfortunate but it's true. And this doesn't just happen with horses, it happens with fish too (working in the fish room at my LFS taught me that). *sigh* *deep breath* *count to ten* "6 Goldfish should not be kept in this bowl because....."

Cal, Ibn is ounced Ih-bn The 'I' is kinda of said back in the throat, if that makes any sense. For a real doozy his registered name is Zeitawi Ibn Hatem!

And I see you've also experienced the blue horse phenomenon! I had a blue horse just a few weeks ago. The old fart desided to play with the stud (Ibn apparently forgot what fences were for that day) and he had bite marks all down his neck. Nothing serious just missing hair and abrasions. I think he was reliving his youth!

And it looks rather fetching

manly women? we have a few of those

men? really? I honestly have never had any problem with men, but you do tend to need to be able to talk the talk I guess. I haven't had much dealing with western pleasure riders. I hang out with a bunch of rodeo riders, and they seem ok.

Wow, the mind boggles! there might be a subgroup meaner than english-style teen girls! Thats just a plain nasty thought!

let me guess, all women/teenage girls and all english style?

Nope, actually. Just about everyone around here rides Western. They aren't really fancy or rich or anything, they are just mean to people that don't own horses. A lot of the "horsey" women around here are actually quite manly...

it comes with the territory.
Funny thing is though, that all but a handful know diddly squat. No horse sense, and i'd wager that a majority have never just sat and watched the horses interact without human interference. They have no concept of a natural reaction or behaviour, and just end up resorting to harsh measres to get their desired result. Its really a crying shame. All it would take would be them being less stubborn in their beliefs, but no, they always know best.

*sigh*

That makes me dislike horses and the people that own them.
