Do American's prefer automatic? I didn't know that. The old lady bit cracks me up though

This is turning into a modern day Aesop's fable... know the one with the grapes that the fox couldn't reach?

I think the manual vs auto debate can be summed up by "Those who can - do!"

It's all about HOW you drive, not what type of trans you have.

Cool - good news for me. I thought it was 'cause I drove a manual that I was leavin' them behind, I must just be a good driver! Love it!

I could be wrong, but manuels are mostly special order now, even in pick up trucks.

Well, the americans bit is based on the fact that over here some 90% of all automatics are of US brands. That is some what shifting and more people are becomming too lazy to shift themself.

And, havn´t you all heard about the old american lady who was taken out in a manual transmission car for the fist time. After a while nervously watching the driver, she offered to stir the gasolin if he promised to keep his hands on the steering weel.

So here I am once more...

They don't make automatic transmissions for bicycles yet, so I guess I'm in the manual camp

ahh, but cali, that's where you're wrong!! Shimano's Di2 is an automatic derailleur, and shifts gears via an electric motor It's been around since about 2001. Why don't you have one yet?

moondog -

I have absolutely NO doubts that a corvette could beat my lil cutlass. I also, however, find it positively laughable when some guy next to me revs his engine and acts all big and tough, and I beat him off the line by a very long shot. *snickers*

In this case, yes, the driver definitely has the advantage... mr grindy gears gets left in the dust and my lil automatic goes vroom down the road. *shrugs* It's not so much what you drive as HOW you drive it. I certainly don't claim to be a Nascar class driver, but hey, at least my car doesn't grind gears and all sorts of fun stuff like that.

I drive automatic simply because I was never taught manual, nor do I have a manual trans car handy.

I don't particularly care, I like my car. She gets me where I'm going and will do so for a number of years in the future, with all luck. With a brand new engine purring away under the hood, we're sure to be together for a while.

I've been in manual trans cars where the driver is very good at shifting. I've also been in manual cars where I want to puke all over the place and I'm NOT one that's e to car sickness.

As for manuals being faster in acceleration... that also depends HIGHLY on the driver. I've beaten people off the line in their fancy lil manual corvettes, leaving them in the dust... of my lil 3.1 engine. It's all about HOW you drive, not what type of trans you have.

As I´ve said before and will probably say a few times more:

Automatic is for old women and americans, the rest of the world can handle manual!

I always had a car with manual gears, but know i have Saab 95 and that one has automatic.
It's really boring to drive with automatic..but when it's really much traffic it's better with automatic

Jorge - a mustang, even a v6 has like 180-200hp, whereas your saturn has like 110, of course it'll take off faster, unless it was towing a tank or something.

Manuals, when driven properly, do indeed have a slightly faster acceleration rate than the same car with an automatic. It's a proven fact that automatics dissipate more power through the driveline than a manual, typically 4-5% more. Be aware, that not all transmissions were created equal and a comparable car with a differently engineered tranny just might blow the other away. Different gearing and clutching and different engines have different torque curves and power levels and they just behave differently.

And super, i drive a manual

A automatic Mustang (shutters at the thought) would kill my manual saturn.

I know nuttin' about cars but have a feeling an auto mustang should be parked right next to the automatic 4WD.

ok, yes you do have more control, but "fun"... control isn't fun...

and, no, the auto I'm driving and 10 times easier with hills and such than my manual.

Edit: wish-ga, just because you have a manual doesn't mean to can get up to speed faster than a auto. A automatic Mustang (shutters at the thought) would kill my manual saturn. However, you probably right that you are getting up to speed faster than they are.
