yeah this really sucks it really makes you want to do something but.... not much you do will help. I just wish some one would hook up a huge chiller to the ocean. And its amazing that a lot of people just dont care. Im shure you can ask 10 us citizens if they really care about whats happening im shure only 2 out of 10 woulkd care (if not less). But this story makes me think : what can i do to help. Im going to try in my own little ways when ever i can. Hey, its better then nothing.

It says in that 2nd article that the local government down there has been fined $3 million. Instead of using this money to pay for more beaurocrats (like I'm sure it has been), it should be given back - on the condition that it be used to buy composting toilets.

The good thing is that if it is indeed just bleaching then the corals can recover and repopulate the zooxanthellae in their tissues. The picture on the first link looks as if the corals have RTN'd or STN'd though which means there is no living tissue on the coral anymore.

People can care as much as they like, its what they DO thats the issue.

[dreamyvoice]I care, I don't want it to happen, but what practical things can every person do, and if only half of us do it will it be enough and if not is it worth doing if it isn't law? Will one person make any sort of difference? [/dreamyvoice]

Its a massively overwhelming problem with little financial incentive for the PTB to fix it.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

I think though, one person can make a difference.

We are all one person, and if we all make a difference, then its a very big difference.

Did you know that the average person eats 2750 fish in their lifetime?

Its amazing how much smog/air pollution is in the air, I think i herd that millions or billions of tons of smog and other polutants end up in the aptmoshpere (spelling?) each year. And today the approved to build 3,500 home and a golf course right across from blackwater wildlife habitat.(if anyone has herd of it) Its so sad just the chemicals from the golf course alone are really going to screw up the river in blackwater. Its makes me really mad i just wish i could of made a difference but im young.... nobody would listen.

Turn off your TV's at night, turn off your monitors when you turn your puters off, don't put the washing machine on unless there's a full load, don't use things like air conditioners and heating unless there's no choice.

These are the type of things that can make a real difference!

Yeah, even if you can only effect change in yourself, you are doing something. If you can effect change in those immediately around you, all the better.

If you think you are too young, think about what happens in your school. Is everything recycled that could be? Or is paper and other things being thrown away? A school is a huge building that hundreds of people use daily. Yet a few students, with the support of some caring teachers, can impact school policies - starting recycling programs and the like.

Maybe you could talk a teacher into letting your class do a study on the cost/savings of changing out inefficient lighting in the school. If the savings were convincing enough, maybe the school would even implement it.

These type of things would have a huge impact. (and BTW, would also look great on a future resume). It's easy to get discouraged when looking at faraway events which we have no control over, but if we look around us there are things that can be done.

Beetledance,

I dont think that our schools would care they dont have enough money to replace lighting, when they did they spent it on solar power which is a joke (in ohio).

if solar power can function well in Scotland, it can function well in Ohio.

Solar power doesnt require direct sunlight to function!!

To be honest theres always ways that we could lessen the impact of global warming , but it seems that most companies and people are unaware of the cultural change required to do it successfully. Globally we could have turned to solar power maybe 30 years ago, together with geothermal and hydro-electric power we could have stopped at least 50% of global pollution, but as ever there were monetary reasons why it was and still is desireable. Big shame on us.
