having lived in southern california for the past 18 years and the last two in northern cali for the last two because of school, i dont really feel quakes that are any less than 5.0. The last quake that freaked me out was the Northridge quake and it shook really really bad where i was living at the time. ya kinda tune them out after so many. But the tsunami warning freaked me out even though i am near sacramento. lets hope that the ground quiets down soon

I've been through lots of earthquakes (including the huge 1989 one), and they don't really scare me anymore. At least not the every day, run-of-the-mill ones.

Tsunamis freak me out though, but luckly I don't have to worry about them because I live on a hill about 700 feet tall (at least) about 10 miles from the ocean.

Uh ya'll on the west coast be careful, and please keep the earthquakes to yourself...I've been through one and it was rather freaky, even some of our aftershocks were rather strong (earthquake was a 5.6, aftershocks as high as 5.3)...1 earthquake is enough for me...better yet, let's just stop all of this who needs another Tsunami
Take care, heidi

And again, I forgot to sign in as mesomeone help me here, please heidi

Certainly, I have had no contact with them since, and there is really no certain way to find out, so I must assume that they died.

Not really, when you get an email from your mate saying they've got a great deal to goto Thailand for xmas, and they'll email you when they get back, and they havent, and now their mailbox is full and the mail is bouncing, you tend to assume the worst!

Ah, the vagaries of statistics.

'Small' events have a certain statistical probability, while large ones have, in the main, a much smaller probability. Thus, it is possible to calculate the mean expected interval between events of a given 'size' (sadly, in this case, 'size' tends to be measured, certainly in actuarial circles, in terms of fatalities - unfortunate but inescapable). So, if the probability of a tsunami event of the kind that struck much of Asia last year is calculated to be sufficiently small, then scientists will state that the mean expected interval between two such events will be, for example, 250 years.

However, this does NOT mean that we can safely wait 250 years until the next one arrives. All that it means is that over vast periods of time (many millions of years), the average frequency of such events is once every 250 years. Which equally means that either [1] we could be lucky, and not see another one like the December 2004 tsunami for another 1,000 years, or we could be unlucky, and the next one turns up next week. Because we cannot predict in advance (at least, to the extent that we would like) when the next such event will occur, we have to rely upon statistical analyses to try and minimise the risk to ourselves, and use that in planning. Which in itself is a kind of roulette game. The only really safe course of action is not to build cities in vulnerable zones, but that's a choice we just don't have with 6 billion people to house on the planet ...

As you may have realised, this is a very sore thing for me, as I believe I lost friends in Thailand. Certainly, I have had no contact with them since, and there is really no certain way to find out, so I must assume that they died.

I'm sorry if I cameacross as harsh, it hasnt stopped hurting yet.

Due to a 7.0 earthquake off the coast of Eureka, California about an hour ago, a tsunami warning for most of the West Coast is taking place. Some low lying areas near the epicenter of the quake have already been evacuated. If you live in a low-lying area near the Pacific Coast, it is recommended that you get ready to get to higher ground if needed.

When a huge 7.0 earthquake happens about 200 miles off the coast of where you live, that seems like an appropriate situation to issue a tsunami warning to me.

You can take a look at the quake and its small after shocks [link=here]http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/" style="COLOR: #FFFFFF[/link].

Aparently someone missed the fact that second largest earthquake in recorded history that managed to kill over one hundred thousand in december. If alerting residence of imminent danger isn't in the public intrest and good then there really is no need for media.
If the media were not to inform of danger they can have their licenses revoked (at least in the US, I'm sure other countries have different rules and regulations reguarding the public use of airwaves). If a friend weren't to tell you of an immediate threat to yourself I'm sure you'd complain.

I think the reason for all these alerts is that the media is a bit jumpy now. After September 11th, everyone was afraid of terrorists. Anyone who lives in America knows that we were always on orange alert (although few of us knew what that meant). The same thing goes here. There have been tsunamis for billions of years. It is only now that we're actually looking for them. If there is a big volcano eruption or an earthquake next year, I'll bet you people will be announcing volcano and earthquake warnings on FP. Chances are that there will not be another major tsunami in our lifetime.

Indeed... Apparently it wasn't the "right" kind of quake to create any significant tsunamis.
