For me - I can't face Xmas, and with only getting £44 a week on Jobseekers, I can't afford it either.

Not entirely sure what I'm going to do yet. Sadly "hibernating and not doing anything" wasn't on the voting list though.

Well not quite almost finished, but I have started shopping and grouping the presents. I don't wrap them until the last minute as I have a cat that likes to eat paper and he always unwraps something.
Wal-Mart had Christmas stuff out before Halloween. How scary is that? We don't have snow yet either so once again it doesn't quite feel like Christmas yet. Lights and decorations aren't even up yet. The first year my hubby and I were living together, I put the tree up Nov.1. Now I'm lucky if it goes up a week before Christmas. And forget getting it down the first of January! Sometimes it's still in the living room on Valentines Day!

Voted for: Some presents are already wrapped up

I went out today and did about three quarters of my Christmas shopping - I also bought a small fibre optic tree, decorations and lights for the front of the house. By the end of the day, my tree was up and decorated, presents wrapped and underneath, and the lights twinkling on my verandah. I'm just full of Christmas spirit now!

I am almost done. Some on layby. Items not actually bought are on the list. My mum wants a bay tree from the plant nursery - will have to get that last minute.

Also a few birthdays dec/jan to think about. Best to do those at the same time as christmas shopping or they sneak up on you.

Just started the list... and oh yes have begun to make something for ONE person. And have decided to get a candy bar for someone else. Should be an interesting holiday...

I have two gift exchanges the week after this one that I haven't gone to buy anything for too...

I hate christmas, im expected to be nice to people. It always ends the same in a nice family row.Lets all celebrate by cutting down trees, massively increasing the amounts of pointless consumer products made, and burning a few thousand extra gigawatts of electricity. Lets not forget to emotionally blackmail our children with a fat bloke in a uniform designed by coca cola who just might bring them presents if theyre good. Lies!

Life wouldnt be the same unless I was forced to eat a sprout at least once a year.

Guess i'll get the girlfriend something. Maybe a nice fish...

Bah humbug.

Git,

My favorite childhood memories include a lot of lies(The Easter bunny, toothfairy, etc) and wasteful products(easter grass anyone?). But I never met anyone who felt insulted or lied to because of Christmas. We've been celebrating Christmas for a very long time, but the trees we chopped down and the paper we wasted didnt really make a big dent until we started chopping down thousands of trees every day. I guess my point is that if we were more environmentally concious year-round, we wouldnt need to worry about Christmas.

Katie

P.S: If that was toungue-in-cheek, then you can ignore my post. I've been a little off today

As usual, well said and I full heartedly agree.

Also, I cannot beat the fact that Costco gets them Xmas decorations up mid-July. They do make a killer pizza, though.

Ah, but then we're not more environmentally friendly all year round are we...

...and as ever it was humour tinged with a serious point. Christmas has become more about capitalism than "good will to all men".

Many faiths practise a type of seasonal celebration at that time of year, and Im not knocking a celebration that leads to festive enjoyment, especially when youve worked hard and deserve a little fun. Im not big on religion, but I do find christmas a strangely hypocritical time of year. Millions go to church when they wouldnt at any other time, many only give donations to charity aroud then when not doing so the rest of the year, and we celebrate a religion of which the primary founder members promoted poverty and humility by spending countless billions on unwanted or useless gifts. Its fun , sure , but when we do it in our billions there is a massive environmental cost attached.

On the old santa front , I was actually pleased when I first discovered my father was actually getting me the presents, and that santa didnt exist. It made me feel loved, and happy that he should want me to have fun and be happy . I also knew that he had gone to effort to get the money and try and give me a nice surprise and I respected him for it. When in retrospect I look back on how I viewed getting presents from santa I can say I was more than a little mercenary. Even now im not proud of that. Moreover I think that mentality took longer to shake off than it perhaps should have. I think it matter what moral messages you send to kids at an early age.

Somehow I think knowing that a good relationship with my father was more important than getting presents was something I grasped at an early age, I think we do children no favours by adding abstract and unreal concepts to try and modify their behaviour, even when we do so unconsciously or out of tradition. Conversely I can also say that outside of family get togethers I actually like seeing the festivities kick off, but I am just that more aware of the cost involved. Its all about mixed messages, what do we want to instill in a kid? Should he/she be focusing on that ps2 in the offing , or perhaps getting on with the world a bit better?

Theres having fun, and then theres doing good. They are not always synonymous.

I would wish that everyone enjoy their christmas, but we can always change the way we do things a little. Christmas can be many things. At this time of year arent we supposed to have a little conscience?

I would wish good will to all peoples and creatures of earth at any time of year, and Im also aware that millions of people and animals wont be having such a great time.My thoughts are primarily with them. The amount of cash we blow internationally could solve poverty problems and environmental issues the world over, even the biggest charities in the worlds yearly intake is probably quite small in comparison to the amount of cash we blow on presents globally in even the first week of shopping alone.Quite frankly , my family have enough property , money and junk to last them a dozen lifetimes without adding to it, and compared to many people in deprived coutries and even in our own backyards we are nearly all in that position of grace. We can only live the way we do because others shoulder the cost, animal or human, and perhaps we could spare a thought for them .

Merry christmas!
