I'm calling on you guys and gals that are parents or have experience with a youngin who suffers colic. Shane seems to be developing it and i'm not sure how to help him out with the pain. He is 3 weeks old so alot of pharmacy drugs for wind arent suitable for him yet.

Any tips?

make sure he takes plenty time over a feed, dont put him down too quickly, try to get as much wind up as possible, does he suck in a lot of air when feeding?

Good luck, some babies just seem to be more suseptible to colic than others! If you're worried take him to the doctor or health visitor for a check up,a lot of these "wind"products contain alcohol so read the labels.

He does suck air in and it sounds like he is really gulping his food. I've bought anti colic bottles in the hopes they will help. I hope they do, they aint cheap!

Lindy,

Have you tried Gripe Water? I've never tried it on my son but know some parents (usually the older generations) who like them. Another one I hear is quite effective on babies is fennel tea.

It might be worth visiting a homeopath or oesteopath too. The latter especially can do wonder for babies with reflux.

The non-medicinal method I prefer is carrying your baby in a sling. PM me if you need more info on what to get, where to get it, etc. I've also heard that taking your bub with you into a warm shower and carrying him high on your shoulder so that there's some pressure on his tummy works for stopping the crying.

Hope your little bub gets better - wish you all the best!

I'm going to go searching for help/answers tomorrow. A couple of my girlfriends used gripe water for their babies who had severe colic. I will try and get the stuff they used because it helped their little ones immensly. (they used the same stuff) Sling might be a good idea too.

Thanks for the ideas. Hopefully this wont last for too long.

I know it sounds odd, but have you given him his formula/breastmilk cold? Cameron started out colicky, and one of my Mom's friends told me to give it a try, and it worked wonders. I talked to his doctor about it before I tried it, and she wasn't against it. Anything's worth a shot when you have a colicky baby!

Lindy, are you using formula? My daughter was terrible with the colic and as she was a premie (3lbs. I wasn't supposed to let her cry a lot as she would burn calories that she needed to gain weight. I finally switched her to a lactose free formula and it was like I had a different baby overnight!!!!

Lindy, you can ignore me because I don't have kids but I am just putting a different idea here... you may like to keep a diary of your own food intake. I am not sure if you are breastfeeding or not but if you are this could be an important aspect. Everything a breastfeeding mum eats comes through in the milk. Some babies get stomach upsets if their mother eats certain foods eg cucumber, chilli, capsicum/peppers.

I just mention it but I am sure you will find the right combination for Shane really soon. Hope he is a lot more comfortable as soon as possible!!!!

Hang in there chick! Keep us up to date.

Lindy Gripe most chemists water works perfect. An old father of three and plenty of Grandies.

The next is rather hard to believe but it does work. My first wife was a registered Midwife. We went through many medical books and came across this very old one and it does work in sever cased.

Mix a drop of Cherry Brandy with a smear of jam stick it onto a dummy and just wait. Very soon you will hear the biggest belch you will ever hear. Guranteed to work and you will get a good night sleep.

He hasnt been too bad today. Took him to see the doctor who atleast didnt think he was lactose intolerant. I am feeding him formula, doc said to just keep watch and ride it out. That is all I expected at the most anyway.
The gripe water that I wanted to get isnt in the pharmacies or health stores in Melbourne. I had to order it from the manufacturer who is in Cairns. Hopefully wont take too long to get here. The other brands of gripe water I found in pharmacies had ingredients I did not like.
Wishga, I'm not ignoring you, you had a valid point but i'm not breastfeeding so its not something I need to worry about. Thanks for taking the time to post though.
Keith, I might have to try your remedy if the gripe doesnt. (wont tell adrian or he'll have a fit!)
Cutiepie, he wont take his formula cold. I tried that today and he wasnt impressed, but thanks anyway.

Thanks for all the ideas guys and gals. Wish me good sleep for tonight!

What I was waiting for has arrived today. It came alot quicker than I expected! I'm going to try it with the next feed.
Last night was pretty lacking in sleep.

I'm going to have to find something else to help him I think. He gulps, gurgles and gags on it, getting more wind in his belly.
Every bottle today he threw back up most of all over me. So today it was colic and reflux. (if thats possible)Going to see the health nurse tomorrow.

Babel, between you and Ryan I think that Shane is going to be 'the' expert pea lobber!
