Couple of questions for Aussies | |

Do koalas smell strongly of Eucalyptus? Is it overwhelming? Like a giant cough drop? 2. Can you make a pet out of the koalas? They just look so fuzzy and sweet. I was wondering if folks down under made pets out of them. I have loved the images of these little honeys my whole life and I have a bunch of 'typical' American questions about these neat little critters. "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder." |

Of course, Texans make pets out of Rattle Snakes (Western Diamond Backs)so nothing is out of our realm of 'pet-dome' LOL Any other Aussies wanna weigh in? I love you guys. Y'all are as cose to a Texas Attitude as anywhere in this world. "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder." |

They smell funky, and they'd rather scratch your stomach out than give you a hug And they sleep 90% of the time I would have thought Aussies would be the opposite of Texans If they weren't so dangerous we wouldnt have to warn people about them |

They just look sweet. People keep racoons as pets here, but the wild ones are dangerous. Trick is to get one as a baby and raise it by hand. Most Aussies I know have the same attitude toward life as Texans. "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder." |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | that part would probably be fine, but sourcing the gumleavesc would be tricky. They have limited species that they'll eat, and at certain times of the year they become toxic so the switch to other types. Its very tricky, and pretty much all they do is eat. Most wildlife parks have massive expanses of gum trees off-site so they can grow several varieties and switch over depending on the time of year. Its a full-time job for some people, sourcing gum leaves. If i had the choice of one of our natives, i'd go with a possum (ringtail or brushtail) or a flying fox. easy to feed, a bit trainable and they like interacting with humans. Our possums are much cuter than your possums, almost cat-like. Americans are a step ahead of us anyway. we aren't allowed to keep any natives other than some birds. Other birds, reptiles and amphibians can be kept with a licence, and mammals can only be kept by registered carers, wildlife parks and zoos. At least you guys get sugar gliders |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | sounded a bit callus then, i am really worried about the tassie devil. last i heard was that conservationists were hoping that the population would die off signifigantly enough to stop the spread of the contagious tumors. sad sad state of affairs. there must something about tasmania , first the the native people the tasmanian aboriginals and then the thylacine and now the devil. |

crazyred Fish Addict LAZY and I don't care :D Posts: 575 Kudos: 360 Votes: 293 Registered: 26-Aug-2005 | Oh, I am loving this thread already!!! Cute animals. My favorite North American animal that is currently hot in the pet industry is one that I grew up with and we thought of it as a pest to be eliminated (well, I didn't ), but the farmers and ranchers did. The prairie dog: http://www.desertusa.com/dec96/du_pdogs.html Where I'm from in West Texas we have the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog. There is a huge prairie dog town in the State Park in my hometown. I used to love to go up there and watch them. I would love to have one as a pet! What a cute little honey!!! "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder." |
