Just wondering if others have DVD recorders???

I just got a DVD recorder to take place of my video player. Now I have the two many choices!

I can record in HQ - High Quality, SQ - Standard Quality, LQ - Low Quality and EQ - (lowest quality)

Record time is approx 1hr, 2hrs, 3.5 hrs and 8 hours I think. This is on a 4.7GIG DVD

Now I would like to know what quality are Normal DVD's??? Is it like SQ???

I purchase the LG recorder for $295 which I thought was pretty good.

ANy hints and tips?

I have one, but I'll probably never use it.

It came with the laptop I got recently, which I really only use for school work.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

there is no such thing, right now that I know of, as a dual layer + or - RW. there are the more common +R dual layer and there are also the less common -R dual layer discs.

as for retail movies, they are all dual layer discs (I'm pretty sure) and I'd assume they are recorded in the best possible video quality.

I have a Panasonic DMRES20 recorder. I usually record shows on SP (2 hrs. on a 4.7 gig disc) and the quality is fine. it's not dvd quality but it's good enough to watch tv shows. out of the box, you can only record off of basic cable channels. I don't think you can record off of pay channels (HBO, etc) or off of ppv because they are copyrighted. also, if you have directv you are really screwed because all programming on directv is copyrighted so I don't think you can record anything...even normal tv shows. you can, or at least should be able to, hook a vcr up to the dvd recorder and make dvd backups of any home made vhs tapes you have.

I also need some help.

I just bought a DVD-R DL for a video that I am going to transfer onto DVD.

Now what do I do. IT is dual layer so what happens when the disc changes layers??? Do I have to pause the video??

Anyone already had some experience with this????

Any help would be lovely.

Thanks.

Basically, you have to make sure the software you're using, the dvd drive/burner in your computer and the dvd player you'll use for playback are all compatible with dual layer discs. if the burner and player are compatible, then you don't have to do anything special during recording or playback. just so you know though, dual layer technology is much more complicated and can lead to more burning problems than single layer discs. also, some brands of discs are much better than others. from what I've read, Verbatim dual layers are the best quality available.

ok, then just make sure that your dvd recorder is compatible to record and playback dual layer discs. when I was doing research on dvd recorders a month or so ago, I only came across 1 or 2 that would record to dual layer. One of them was a Sony and I think there might have been a Samsung that did as well. If your recorder does not support dual layer recording then it will probably record only to the first layer, meaning it will only use half of the disc.

finding out if your recorder supports dual layer recording shouldn't be too hard. it should say on the box or in the owner's manual.

wait for blu-ray.

I'm not buying a blu-ray or HDDVD until one of them drops off or it is clear that they are both here to stay. having 2 competing High def dvd formats just reminds me too much of VHS vs. Beta. Only VHS stuck around and I think the same thing will happen here.

besides, from what I read not long ago, neither blu-ray nor HDDVD will have recorders out until sometime in '07.

well then I would guess you simply put in a dual laye disc and press record. you should probably check the owner's manual just in case though. there should be instructions on how to record to dual layer discs.

Sony and Panasonic both have players already in circulation in Japan, with several players slated to hit US markets in April.

both blu-ray and HDDVD are supposed to have High def players out some time this year, but neither are suppposed to have recorders out till some time in '07. that's according to a couple of articles I read a couple months ago before I bought my Panasonic recorder.

Rast, what is the make and model of your player?

well like I said those articles I had read were a couple months old, and release dates for hardware/software can change day by day. still though, almost $3000 for the recorder and $20 or $40 per disc

that price will come down in a couple years, not to mention if both formats are going to stick around we should know by then. that's when I'll splurge on one. I may pick up one of the new high def players if they're not too insanely priced, but those recorders will have to wait. I'll be fine with my Panasonic recorder for now.

oh and RAST, LG makes more than one model with HDD....what is the model number? also, have you tried at all to record to a dual layer disc yet?
