Babel, I will catch you in chat on the weekend to talk cameras more.

Lisa, some pics would be good if you have time to get some.

I still have a week or so to make final selection.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

All but the minolta are relatively small.. in fact, apart from the A520 they're pretty much pocket size.

I've got the A510 and it can fit in my pocket also.

for the price, the minolta is the way to go, big zoom, runs on AA batteries (rechargeables last longer) and its not really that big.

They're all pretty responsive in terms of shutter lag and autofocus, so you're not going to have much problems there. I'm at work tomorrow so if you want i can get some sample shots from some of them if you want...

ahh, the joys of working at a camera store!!

Lindy,
Sorry I havent got more time to respond now *kicks office non-internet-policy*
Had a quick look at your links, one thing to keep in mind...is that size really does matter ())...you'll have your hands full with the boys if you're out and about at the park ect, you don't want to have to keep an eye on a big eye catching camera. Additionally a larger camera is easily spotted by the people you're trying to sneak a pic of and that's one lovely candid shot ruined.

I should have time to add my 2cents worth this weekend...I hope the exchange rate improves :%).

Most of the details I dont understand but these were what caught my eye on the site dallas suggested. I'll go look at dpreview.com now to see what they have to say.

I use cnet.com for gadget reviews. They also list several stores that have the product you want and give you the lowest price. Might be of some use to you.

Good luck, I'm on the look out for a new cam too

Edit: After checking Babel's site, my link is pwned

dpreview.com is a great site....especially if you know about what they're talking about ...they're photo people and write their reviews as photopeople for photopeople :%)....

I've still got my old canon powershot which is a great basic camera that can also do partial manual to full manual control...something that's very important to me (surprised? ) I hate to see people say that they dont need even the possibility of manual control as digital cameras are a great way to learn photography without messing up shots or missing moments because you can quickly see if somethings wrong and go back and fix it .

As for chewing thru batteries, make sure you're using rechargables...they really do last much longer than regular ones, and when you have a double set you can always have some charged. Paying more for a higher priced media card will also mean you can take pics faster.

Gotta remember the $$ conversion rate

lindy : check this site out : http://www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au/store/index.asp

have a look at some, and then come back and ask for opinions.. it will give us a feel for what you're after.. then we can say what is good or bad

edit : megil may be talking about dpreview.com

I really like my coolpix 2100 - except for the batteries. I have to use AA batteries that either don't last for squat, but are rechargeable, or they last a good long time, but aren't rechargeable, and cost a fortune. All the features are great.

anyways you can see all the pix I've taken [link=here]http://photobucket.com/albums/v696/mattyboombatty/" style="COLOR: #FFD700[/link]

I think it serves it's purpose well. It only costed around $100 or $150 at the time of purchase, so I'm sure you high rollers can find something even better.

Matt

Lindy,

I myself am on a quest for a digital camera though my
bidget is slightly lower than yours ($400 instead of 500).
Lisa (dallas) suggested Nikon's Coolpix P2, 8400, and
powershot SD 550.

After looking at the cameras I am still undecisive, and the
final advice I was given was to find a camera that had
Decent megapixels, and also a decent array of features.
Looking at the specs. can also help narrow down your camera
choice by features.

There is a really goo dsite out there that I am sure
another will link you to, as I always forget to bookmark
it.

HTH,
Megil

P.S. I will be watching this thread to help with my
decision as well hope you don't mind. *hitchhikes
thread*
