He's quite the animal lover. I was holding a bunny once when he walked in and he came over and started ooing and ahing over her. Jorge and I have also met Marty's retired long time partner, Joe Nuxhall. He was also Reds pitcher. We've also met Jim Scott, a radio personality. They're all local celebrities, and they're all very nice and generous people. I've met all the members of 98 Degrees too (if anyone remembers them) ![]() |

At least I think that is the name of that.... They have a song that is played over and over on the radio "how far is heaven" or something similar. But was taking the ex-mother in law to a concert of theirs (she is a die hard fan) and talked to all of the band members and had the drummer compliment my hair etc. Nice guys. She was NOT friendly. I also was on a flight with Sylvester Stallone. I have met Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman (Josh and Reva, The Guiding Light). They come to my hometown area every summer for a few weeks to do theatre work. I have had cocktails w/Kim. She is a very nice, down to earth person. Very beautiful and VERY tiny!!! I have also been on a flight with Robert Newman. |

I am not to be swayed into thinking that one would not at least shoot a second glance at a favorite singer, actor, or whatnot. Unless one has no interests/hobbies whatsoever, he/she cannot truly dislike celebrities. Last edited by Cup_of_Lifenoodles at 30-Apr-2005 12:13 |

The local aquarist society use to hold an annual show & display at the convention center and I remember having a long coversation with an elderly lady about some of the various tank setups and fish when her daughter came up who happened to be Joan Rivers (not quite as obnoxious back then as she is now). I met President Ronald Reagan after he had finished his second term. |

What did they do to you?) why post on this thread at all? Just to be pretentious? How is it hurting you if people want to swap stories? "Hate" them or not, they exist, and plenty of them do in fact have significant skills worthy of note. Janna mentioned J. K. Rowling - maybe she "got lucky" because a lot of people read her books, but you know what? We read them because they're wonderful. Anyone see Ray, or Hotel Rwanda? I'd say Jamie Foxx and anyone involved with HR did more than just "get lucky." Is it a greater level of fame than perhaps those talents warrant? Sure - but that's not their fault, and frankly it's a little unfair to imply that every person who happens to be famous is automatically worthless. -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

Actually, hobbies have EVERYTHING to do with celebrities, as your personal opinions and pastimes reflect who you view as being the said idyllic individuals. Let us assume you are into model building. If by chance, you meet up with the greatest model builder of all time, I'm sure you'd be somewhat awestruck, if anything. Your hobbies reflect which kinds of people you view as being "celebrated". The word is not ordained merely for those who act or play sports (whatnot). I can see how kiddies are attracted to the idea of fame and fortune but does anyone really think these people should be held in such high esteem. Frankly, I'm more impressed by the man on the street who does more for his community than any celeb ever has... If you're impressed by him, then you are giving consent to his achievemnts, and in turn, celebrating him--thereby making him a celebrity in your perspective. Also, you are falsifying and generalizing. Many celebrities do not just flaunt their wealth as you have so eloquently shown them to (not all celebrities are even rich, as is evidenced by my above statement)--they share it. More for the community than any celebrity ever has, eh? Better check that again. Because of their reputations, many celebrated personalities have the abilities and do achieve great things in the domain of philanthropy. I doubt your community man in question could do as much for the people as Oprah Winfrey (I despise her show, but she is a genuinely good person) could. This is akin to your earlier statement in which to spoke of celebrities as analogous to, and I do quote, "spoilt brats". Consequently, you are now stereotyping that all indivduals who are superb in their respective fields are petulant children. Thusly, anyone who has any talent and has gained recognition for it whatsoever is deemed a bad role model for your children? No comprendo, amigo. Also, just a side note, not all people believe Casey Whatchimightcallit to be as horrendous as you do, so obviously she must at least appeal to some of the demographically diverse, amirite? Therefore, you cannot really assert that she is a bad actor/singer/whatever the hell she does, and she must have SOME talent; just not one that appeals to you. It's not logical for you to state that, as you dislike her, she is undeserving of the spoils of celebritism (is that a word?). EDIT: Took out the Casey part for clarity Last edited by Cup_of_Lifenoodles at 30-Apr-2005 12:04 |

My opinion... Sure, celebrities are often over-hyped, overpaid, and underworked. However, they often did something to gain celebrity status. Maybe they sing. If there weren't any singers out there, folks wouldn't have good music to listen to and relieve stress. Musicians obviously perform a useful service, otherwise nobody would be willing to shell out $18 for a c.d. Of course, I'm generalizing on that last point. Many of us listen to music without paying for the songs. ![]() Besides, many celebs act just like normal people. They do their jobs, they hang around and relax, they chill with friends. Some of them are quite down-to-earth, and have no compunctions with being seen with "normal" folks. In fact, some celebrities even keep their own fish tanks, and do their own maintenance. Even though they can afford to have people take care of the tank for them, they still invest their own time in setting up tanks they can feel proud of. As long as a person is mature and willing to do stuff other than laze around and complain, they can't be all that bad. |

I can be impressed by someone and consent to their achievements but I'm not necessarily celebrating them. Approval and celebration are two different things. Some of Oprah's deeds certainly impress me but I don't find the need to celebrate her. Did you read this line in one of my posts? "apologies to some celebs who try to be normal". You see I haven't stereotyped all celebs at all! Your whole argument is invalid. I'm puzzled at how the community man and Oprah can be compared. Oprah is filthy rich and can give away 100 cars at a whim but at what effort. How many assistants does she have to do her "work"? The community man has no personal assistants to help him do his work and is required to make greater sacrifices than our generous millionaire. How much a person can do for another can not gauged simply by the dollar value of what they give away. I'd suggest you get married. Once you do you'll see the plethora of magazines devoted to celebs and then you might read about the behaviour of alot of these celebs. See, I even married someone who loves "celebrities". I have a number of hobbies in which those with "celebrity" status abound and I'm sorry but I just can't go Ga-ga over them. Yes they have achieved and good on 'em. You say it's not logical for me to state that I dislike Casey's talent and her ability to be a good role model. Yes it is! it's called an opinion! Yes she appeals to the teen brigade but don't they allways know what's best? ![]() If you start at the top of this thread the main type of celebrity people are refering to as am I are the entertainment types. Cup, if you have the need to pin Bradd Pitt and others over your bedroom wall, great, go for it, but I won't be too soon. |
