Das Herrgott würfelt nicht

- Albert Einstein, explaining his bafflement over Niels Bohr's explanation of quantum mechanics (he had good reason, not least the way in which quantum phenomena seemed to violate relativistic causality: even today, the greatest minds in physics have yet to reconcile general relativity with quantum mechanics).

Ooh, a good one. Nowadays, String Theory is said to bring together our macroscopic and microscopic worlds. Grand Unified Theory... Ah, it's a beautiful thing to unify everything. It apparently works mathematically (with the addition of about 7 more dimensions), but since strings are so small people aren't sure how to test the theory yet. Oh well. Perhaps it's one thing we weren't meant to know.:%)

This one is from the European Techno Band Scooter. Besides a good and fast beat, one of their songs contains a “statement” that might be borrowed from somewhere else. It is:

Ya know, at first glance, the invent-a-particle motive does seem like inaccurate guesswork, but nuclear physics has really taken off in the last century, so I assume that they must have a general idea of what's going on. Bah, like I said, I hate physics. :[

Only 11 dimensions? Ah, that'll be heterotic string theory. If you want the hard stuff, go for bosonic string theory. That needs 26 dimensions.

Of course, strings only make sense as a physical construct (as opposed to a theoretical construct) if you also introduce the concept of D-branes.

Here you go - D-branes and bosonic string theory in one easy lesson.

I thought the superstring theory WAS the one that most current physicists are referring to. Suffice to say, none of us here are standing physics doctorates (my mother is, but she was classically trained and refuses to accept string theory), so I'll try and gather what information I can find on the subject.

well, i have a bachelor's of science in physics, but that's a far cry from understanding it at a doctoral level

and cup, one of my former classmates was going on to higher levels of nucler physics, and he told me that there was a chart invented much like the periodic table of elements in which most of the known particles fit. some of the blanks in between are empty, but a couple particles have been "found" which fit the chart, so that is where the invent-a-particle method has its roots. i told him it still sounds like guesswork to me, and "justify your government grant" games and that's when we got into a deep discussion about strings with some doctoral students.

edit: i forgot to mention one of my favorite quotes, which lindy had as her signature:

if you get upset at someone, walk a mile in their shoes. then you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"That's what I like about science. It's not math!" -My physics teacher

There's a great book called "The Hole in the Universe" by K.C. Cole that goes into the difficulties of uniting string theory with the theory of relativity.

I LOVE physics.

Yucky Physics, I barely survived it in high school, I don't want to think about it here

One quote I heard during inservice that I still like:

"If you plan for a year, plant rice. If you plan for 10 years, plant trees. If you plan for 100 years, educate the future." don't know why i would like that one

I don't post here (FP) often but I just wanted to share some of the quotes I've collected:

"Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day"~anon

"Athiesm is a non-prophet organization"~anon

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty nor security" ~ Benjamin Franklin

"Organization is for people too lazy to look for things"~anon

"The early bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese"~anon

"Not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance, is the death of knowledge"~ Alfred North Whitehead

"Some people are like slinkies. Not really good for anything, yet you can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs."~unknown

"Be just what you is, not what you is not. Folks that do this are the happiest lot."~ Dr. Seuss

"Never judge a book by its movie!"~anon

"I ferret proofed the house but there still getting in!"~licence plate frame (might need to be a ferret fancier to get that one, lol)

And a couple of my favorite movie qoutes:

"First person that comes out this door gets a... gets a lead SALAD, you understand?!" ~Narrator from "Fight Club"

"Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly... stupid."~Jack Sparrow from "Pirates of the Carribean"

"Good dags. D'ya like dags?"~ Mickey from "Snatch"
