I don't really think it would be a good book for 10 year olds either, but I guess it really depends on the kid. Some kids are really mature and could probably handle it, while others cry when they see Snow White. I myself was ready to hide under my chair a few times toward the end of it! .....

I don't really know Dud, you're 12....what did you think? (maybe we can distract him so he's not staring at the grim)

And Heidi, don't even think about looking at the **spoilers** in the forum on that site you posted!

Oh don't worry I'm not looking at any spoilers and am actualy beginning to think we need a spoiler thread hereI don't want it ruined though last night I read the most I have yet about 200 pages, and that just isn't me...I'm thinking that the books would be good for middle school but that is just me...if the kids began reading them when they began and Harry was 10then each year or so...I don't know I'd go with the 13 year olds or so, the younger ones would definately be (ok I hope they would be) grossed out with all the snogging Ron is doing heck even I'm grossed out by it, get a grip Ok enough said time to go back to reading

Depends on the kid. My son reads Robert Jordan, Mercedes Lackey, Terry Brooks, Raymond Feist, David Eddings, Tad Williams, etc. He turned 10 in December. I think if they are used to larger books and multi-faceted plots then yes they might be ready for this kind of reading. If Harry Potter is the thickest book they have ever seen, then no they are not ready for this. Each child is different.

It is all how you raise the child, and whether they naturally pick up reading.

I agree, it definitely depends. But I think a lot of people don't give kids the credit they deserve for being able to digest sophisticated or complex plots in books. I was reading adult books by the time I was 10 or so - I remember the library staff used to constantly ask my mother if I really was allowed to read some of the books I was reading (nothing r rated or anything, just complex storylines!). She knew there was no problem with it; after all I learnt to read when I was three years old. I know that's not typical, but I still hate it when writers write down to kids, thinking they can't handle something more, or like Calla said, writing to the standards and style of TV and movies.

Having said that, I was a little shocked at some of the references and words used in this book - but then it's only to be expected, if the book and characters are supposed to be believable. They are all sixteen/seventeen now after all.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde

I was a bit shocked too!

I don't understand why they lower the reading age and then raise the classification!

I wasn't so into this book, it was flat in comparison to 3,4 & 5. I was still interested, but it was a little more dull than I had hoped.

Perhaps she tried to squash it all into this book so that #7 flowed more easily?

Bought, read and finished.

I was hardly aware it was coming out... took heidi and one of my friends mentioning it to make me realize.

I need to go back, read the previous book, then read this one again. I would have been completely lost if heidi hadn't briefed me on the ending of the last book. Been too long since I've read it.

I thought it was good, but a little bit different than expected. I do agree that the writing style seems to be different. There were some words I stumbled over... seem to be british terms. 'Trainers' and the aforementioned 'snogging' (and I agree, heidi) threw me off for a bit.

I didn't get into the harry potter thing for a while... at the time the first book came out, I was working at my local library, and watched the dozens of copies we had go out time and time again. I waited until the rush was over before picking it up to see what the deal was. I own the series now.

"a lot of people don't give kids the credit they deserve for being able to digest sophisticated or complex plots in books."

Agreed

But anyway, my bro is 10 or so years old (I stopped actually counting at about 3 ) & I cant picture him reading 4,5 or 6 But then again, maybe its cuz Im reading them all the time

I think Joanne realised that adults really enjoy her books to, so she's added a bit of "snogging" & such

Speaking in a strictly literary sense, the book is not bad at all. Whoever can say that the literature itself "sucks" is, IMO, readqing too much into the assumed "immaturity" of the genre/series.

Rowling is, though quite repetitive, very good at dialogue and characterization, both of which contribute greatly to the book itself.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't want to even do a spoiler here, yes I finished the book, no I'm not happy...so I created a [link=spoiler thread though I think it should be more of a rant thread or the first post was more of a rant]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/The%20Recovery%20Room/62102.html" style="COLOR: #FF1493[/link]

I find harry potter a bit immature nowadays, but it is somewhat of an obligation to finish the series, hence, I reserved it. That's not to say I'll be there at 12, but whatever.

Sorry bout my vote (voted: haven't read 'em). I did actually read the first one jsut to see what all the adults were going crazy for. I think if I was reading it to a littlie and seeing it through their eyes and sharing with them I would feel differently. I just need something different from my reading.

All the best with your countdown and enjoy the latest from Ms Rowling.

It's not actually on order - the line at the bookstore is always atrocious, so I'm just walking into my local grocer at 12 (actually, at 2am, when I get off work - stupid morning newspaper requires late late late work! ) and buying it. Probably in and out in 10 minutes. Then I can stay up and read the whole thing, sleep for ten hours, and reread it. Loooove weekends.

I'll get it once it's available @the library

I bought my younger sister the complete hitchhikers trillogy (yep all 5 books in one handy dandy covered bit of fun) but I don't buy books for myself :%). I knew it was coming out soon and look forward to reading it but just don't like books 4 and on as much as I enjoyed books 1-3.

Ok I don't think there is as much axcitement as there was 2 years ago with the last book...but hey I'm excited about the new book, and am trying to reread at least book 5 before book 6 comes out, don't think I'll make it, but heck I'm giving it a try:%)

So am I the only one ready for book 6 or has everyone else just given up?

Me I'm ready, and we only have 9.5 days to go

And no I won't ever grow up:%)
