Basically, what you do is this.

Step 1 : Position standard can opener on can, ready to open, but do not apply pressure to the handles at this point.

Step 2 : Cover with cloth.

Step 3 : Apply pressure to can opener handles to pierce a hole. This should let air into the can.

Repeat steps 1 to 3 above to piece 4 holes at 90° offsets to each other.

Once this is done, you should be able to open the can safely without needing the cloth in place.

Enjoy!

I bet you have to cover it with a cloth when opening to avoid getting spurted in the eyes!

maybe they put the misture (dough/batter?) in the can then cook it so it could be expanded or pressurised. Sounds very exciting. the opeing night could be a bit of a dissapointment if the thing doesn't pop/wheeze/sigh or pffft even a little.

I remember the desserts "spotted " and "toad in the hole" from the Adrian Mole books in the 80s.

maybe the spotted has a tendency to, um... erupt when you put pressure on it?

I'm so sorry but all I have been able to do is laugh while reading this...

First I'm not sure I would want to eat anything from a can that might explode under normal circumstances.

Second the name is giving me fits (I really need to grow up and mature one of these days, I know)

Third, Tanker your post makes sense, which leads me to Cali that sounds reasonable way to open it, guess we won't be using an electric can opener today now, will we?

Fourth, I usually don't heat things in a can unless I'm camping and even then I open the can, so we're back to the opening the can with the towel over it bit

Fifth, I don't normally put metal, especially cans in the microwave to heat any itemmy Nanny used to, talk about a fireworks display

Sixth, as far as what it tastes like, it sounds like a bread pudding to mebut, there is only one way to find out...

So why exactly did your sister buy this?

I'll go and grow up and try to mature a bit, Heidi

Awesome. That makes sense I guess...

Would anyone care to tell me what this stuff tastes like? I imagine kind of like a Twinkie but with no frosting...

Also, if you are opening it after heating the can in a pan of hot water, any syrup would be scaldingly hot.

I prefer to microwave.

My sister has a can of Spotted , and on top of the can it says "COVER CAN WITH A CLOTH TO OPEN". I've read the cooking directions numerous times to see where a cloth would fit in, but I just can't find it.

Can anybody shed some light on this strange phrase?

Also... What does Spotted Dick taste like? I'm kind of scared to try it...

At one time there were alot of these warnings on vaccuum sealed containers. The warning was there because of the pressure difference when opening a sealed container. Due to the differnet pressures involved you can actually get explosive compression, which is the ambient air entering the can and basically blowing the contents out into your lap. Some soda companies still place similar warnings on their containers.

Maybe there is some toxic gasses that leach out when you open it. Either that or the can is sealed so tightly that the rush of the air going into the can when you open it creates a rip in time and space, thereby engulfing the entire state of california.

If that's the case, open a whole bunch.

It is for safety as the steam could easly burn you.

That does make more sense, but the directions say to open the can before you cook it.

Spotted

As far as I know it is a vey old English Recipe It could have got it name (spots) from the sultanas.

Here is a recipe I found using GOOGLE

Categories: British Dessert European
Yield: 6 Servings

8 oz Self-raising flour
1 pn Of salt
4 oz Margarine
2 oz Castor sugar (Superfine)
4 oz To 6 oz sultanas (Big
-raisins)
6 tb Water

1) Have ready a sheet of foil or a double thickness of greaseproof paper
brushed with melted margarine. 2) Make the pudding crust: Sieve the flour
and the salt. Rub in the margarine. Add the sugar and sultanas. Mix in the
water to make a soft dough. 3) Turn out onto a floured board and form into
a roll. 4) Wrap loosely but securely in the greaseproof paper or foil. Tie
or seal the ends. 5) Place in the steamer and cover tightly. Steam for
1.1/2 to 2 hours. 6) Serve with hot custard sauce or sprinkle with castor
sugar. Variation: At stage 3: Put the mixture in a medium-sized (1.1/2
pint) pudding basin with a round of greaseproof paper in the bottom and
brush all round inside with melted margarine. Smooth the top. Cover with
foil, or double greaseproof paper brushed underneath with melted margarine
and steam for 1.1/2 to 2 hours. Serve with hot Custard sauce or sprinkle
with castor sugar.
