Panaque suttoni?

EDIT: I guess that is an out-dated name... so Panaque suttonorum?

It's gotta be one of those two species. I wrote an article about the Blue Eyed Panaque, so embarrass me if I'm wrong.

This one's got me foxed completely.

At first sight, I thought "Hey, it's Balitorine hillstream loach" ... then I saw the adipose fin. I can't find any Characiform species that even remotely resembles this. I must have searched something like 2,000 fish photos and I've still drawn a blank.

Aww, you flatter me, Shin.

I'll give it till tomorrow morning, and then post a fish.

To all: Oh, btw, these pics aren't exactly mine to use and will be deleted from the above photobucket account once this is over. (I suppose those with copyrights are okay, but better safe than sorry).

Oh, now. I notice that we're only getting a head shot of this one. Presumably because the back end would give the game away far too easily.

OK, let's see: pelvic fins directly beneath the pectorals, which means we're dealing with an evolutionarily advanced Perciform fish. The most obvious candidate for such a fish would be a Cichlid. And, the only Cichlids I know that are that shape are Crenicichla species (Pike Cichlids). Now, which one? I'm tempted to go with one of the Subgenus Batrachops bottom dwellers here ... I'll take a long shot and go with a juvenile Crenicichla (Batrachops) semifasciata.

Batrachops — batrachos, Greek noun meaning frog, and ops, Greek noun meaning face or eye. The name alludes to the short broad snout and large mouth of the originally included species.

They characteristically have a roundish head, and Crenicichla semifasciata definitely has an upturned mouth. They are unique among Crenicichla in having the shortest snout. I don't think that's what it is.... but of the true ID I haven't the faintest clue. >.<

Gymnotus don't have those needle-nose mouths. That's a Rhamphichthys of some sort. Gonna go with Rhamphcichthys rostratus, the only name I know off the top of my head from that genus...:%)

Yeah, its a Rhamphichthys. Unfortunately, there are virtually NO pictures of them on the web, besides one or two of R. rostratus. So that leaves these species that it could be:

Rhamphichthys apurensis
Rhamphichthys atlanticus
Rhamphichthys drepanium
Rhamphichthys hahni
Rhamphichthys lineatus
Rhamphichthys longior
Rhamphichthys marmoratus
Rhamphichthys pantherinus
Rhamphichthys schomburgki

This one is COMPLETELY new to me. The whole Genus, in fact. Ayone know ANYTHING about these Rhamphichthys at all? Shini, this seems like a job for you

What family do they belong to? What size do they grow to? And will Shini make one of these the next Rare Fish Of The Week?

I'm also quite impressed by C_o_L's ability to find some truly way-out oddballs. Perhaps he and Shini should team up someday - set up a public aquarium full of weird fish for aquarists to come and stare goggle-eyed at

The genus belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae. According to Fishbase, this particular species reaches a godawful size of over three feet!

I saw some fishes similar to these at the LFS before, but I have I'm not sure if they were actually a species Rhamphichthys or not. However, I didn't pick them up for the reason that they didn't seem interested in food at all, and I think the poor things eventually starved to death.

LoL, own a public aquarium? Well, at the very least, the two of us have years ahead of us to work up to something like that.

Hehehe...off target.

Wait, that was meant to be a pun, right?

Anyhoo, this fish is quite difficult to ID correctly simply because most pictures of this fish are incorrectly defined (often being mistaken for nigrovid. and fluv., though, as can be seen, they look completely different from one another).

Pretty new as far as I can gather. Fishbase says it reaches 7 inches in length, but I'd be wary just in case it matches some of its bigger relatives. This page]http://www.angelfire.com/biz/piranha038/ossubtus.html[/link] contains some taxonomic information, and [link=this page from fishbase.org gives some information about its reported wild diet.
