Shinigami Ichthyophile Catfish/Oddball Fan Posts: 9962 Kudos: 2915 Registered: 22-Feb-2001	Gymnotus don't have those needle-nose mouths. That's a Rhamphichthys of some sort. Janna Mega Fish Posts: 1386 Registered: 24-Aug-2003	Yeah, its a Rhamphichthys. Unfortunately, there are virtually NO pictures of them on the web, besides one or two of R. rostratus. So that leaves these species that it could be: Rhamphichthys apurensis Rhamphichthys atlanticus Rhamphichthys drepanium Rhamphichthys hahni Rhamphichthys lineatus Rhamphichthys longior Rhamphichthys marmoratus Rhamphichthys pantherinus Rhamphichthys schomburgki They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes, They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver, So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Ayone know ANYTHING about these Rhamphichthys at all? Shini, this seems like a job for you What family do they belong to? What size do they grow to? And will Shini make one of these the next Rare Fish Of The Week? I'm also quite impressed by C_o_L's ability to find some truly way-out oddballs. Perhaps he and Shini should team up someday - set up a public aquarium full of weird fish for aquarists to come and stare goggle-eyed at Panda Catfish fan and keeper/breeder since Christmas 2002

Shinigami Ichthyophile Catfish/Oddball Fan Posts: 9962 Kudos: 2915 Registered: 22-Feb-2001	The genus belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae. According to Fishbase, this particular species reaches a godawful size of over three feet! I saw some fishes similar to these at the LFS before, but I have I'm not sure if they were actually a species Rhamphichthys or not. However, I didn't pick them up for the reason that they didn't seem interested in food at all, and I think the poor things eventually starved to death. LoL, own a public aquarium? Well, at the very least, the two of us have years ahead of us to work up to something like that. Anyhoo, this fish is quite difficult to ID correctly simply because most pictures of this fish are incorrectly defined (often being mistaken for nigrovid. and fluv., though, as can be seen, they look completely different from one another).

Fishbase says it reaches 7 inches in length, but I'd be wary just in case it matches some of its bigger relatives.
