It's blood drive time again here at work and I am usually a great donor. I have, in the past, given a gallon. Well, sometimes my hemotocrit is too low to donate so when I tried last year I was really nervous about it. I could NOT get my pulse rate below 100 no matter how hard I tried, so I couldn't donate. This year, I told myself "no big deal, just pretend like everything is fine." Well, it didn't work....my pulse rate was 102...2 points over donation level, so he decided to go ahead and check my blood and then check my pulse one more time. My hemotocrit was 36...2 points below donation level. So, even if I could have managed to get my pulse rate down 2 points I was inelligible...AGAIN...because of my hemotocrit.

I give up! I know there are people out there that need blood desperately , and I tried to give them mine, but the Red Cross people don't want it so that's the breaks.

I'm so pathetic.

I have spent more than three consecutive months in the UK, so I'm completely ineligable to donate blood ever again. Sometimes I think their rules are a little strict and ridiculous, but if you need blood, would you want to take any chances?

I know, I'm just complaining because....I'm a whiner. Makes me feel better to get it off my chest. I hope nobody out there lacks A+ because they just turned down some good stuff. If less than 30 on the hemotocrit is anemic then 36 is close enough. I know, I know....close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.....

hey you are in the company of millions. They won't take mine because I am an RH negative female.

Too bad because my blood type (A-) is the second rarest.

Even if they would take the RH negative factored blood I am anemic, so strike two, and really low blood pressure to begin with

Well, at least you tried! That's not pathetic! I, on the other hand, am definitely pathetic. I have NEVER donated blood. I weighed about 44kg up until I was about 18 years old, and you have to weigh at least 45kg, so for a long time that was my excuse. But I weigh about 51kg now, nothing to stop me from going ahead (unless I'm anemic or at least low in iron, which is probably likely given my diet), but I've still never gone ahead. I hate getting blood taken for tests, it makes me feel sick and dizzy and also makes my arm bruise so badly every time that I can't use it properly for days afterward. So I find it really hard to do it willingly . I know, what's a bit of nausea and bruising, compared to what it could do to help someone else? Still, I have never been able to bring myself to do it.

The last few times I tried to give blood the Red Cross wouldn't take it. One time it was because of a skin rash on my arm. The next it was because I took asprin within 48 hours or something like that . . . My Mom went the same day but becuase she had her ear pierced within 6 months or a year, they wouldn't take hers either.

I don't even know what my blood type is anymore. I asked the last few times at the Dr. and still have no idea.

Nothing pathetic! Just the facts of the Red Cross. They should be able to take it anyway, test it, and then decide if it is something they can use or not.

I just don't try at the Red Cross anymore. If I go to the Dr. or something and the do a test, I will offer.

I can't give blood either for the same reason as Nowherman. They think I have mad cow disease. Moo.

My girlfriends initials are CJD no joke! She gives blood all the time.

I dont give blood on the grounds that im a b negative, and spent a lot of time in swamps catching diseases. If it has "fever" in the name, Ive had it.

Im also a complete wimp with needles, but that has nothing to do with it.

I cant donate...but only because I keep getting more tattoo's and piercings. Maybe one of these years I can go without getting ink or another hole stabbed in my body and I can give some blood.

Nate - I doubt it.

I'm not allowed to donate blood b/c I'm not big enough yet. :-/ I just make the age cut off...but I dont make the weight cut off.

At least you tried though. That's what matters.

DRO...they've changed the rule on that, now, if you get your tats and piercings at a licensed shop you can donate blood without having to wait 12 months....it's on your word that it IS a licensed shop and not some gangster's basement.

I used to have the same problem, I have several tats myself; I'm glad they changed that rule....but now I can't get passed the hemotocrit test and pulse check!

Colorado doesnt have any kind of "formal" licensing for tattoo/piercing artists...The state does health code check ups to make sure their equipment is up to par but thats about it...and I get most of my work done at my artists house after shop hours since he is a good friend.

but the quality of my work def. doesnt say "gangsters basement"!

That's good to hear...neither does mine. Maybe we should start a "Show your tat" thread in here so we can show off our ink. I've got some pretty nice if I do say so myself. Fortunately, Texas has a rigorous licensing requirement so, I can verify to the Red Cross that I'm all good.....except for that dang hemo count and pulse rate. Oh well, I tried.
