If you can upgrade the graphics card it would be good. Usually what I do when getting a new laptop is decide what minimums I want and then go through each of the models and see what ones I can customize to the specs I want for the best price. It takes me several days to decide on a laptop but I always get the best deal possible. This one had a free upgrade to 1GB of ram from 256MB. Huge improvement but I did end up with a slightly lower graphics card than I wanted.

But my question to you is wether in your opinion HP sells good products? Good parts? And Overall is HP a good system?
Thanks,

I've had toshiba, compaq and am now on a gateway machine.

The toshiba shortly after getting it would spontaneously shut down. The compaq wouldn't read DVD+RW (don't particularly care) and had the best graphics of the bunch (Nvidia).

I'm now on a Gateway machine, husband uses my compaq for photo editing (basic) and general internet surfing. No real games on this particular machine. Its ultra slim (no more than an inch thick), 15" screen and is used primarily on the road for downloading my media cards.

I like all of my machines, each has their own purpose.

Next machine - probably a compaq again, or dell or if i have the money, alienware. But I'll probably hang onto this for another year or so.

Damnit. Alienware. You lucky punk.

I'm currently stuck with some old Inspiron crap from an estimated four years ago. The only things I can run on there are Grim Fandango and other ancient adv. lucasarts games (or rather, those are the only games I'm even interested in playing on it). I tried installing Guild Wars, once, thinking it was rather light on the system; don't ask how that went.

I'm not sure if each respective brand is better than the other. IMO, when it comes down to the actual laptop, the specs probably mean more than the label; of course, you'll want to take a looksie around for price comparisons, but, bar that, brand name, or so I've realized, matters little.

I've got an HP pavillion and well... yeah. It's a good 5+ years old, but it was a good lil machine for a while. Never had any really major problems with it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as much more than a glorified typewriter.

I'm sure the newer ones are heaps better, but this one has a miniscule hard drive, is slow as molasses (even on a fresh reformat) and generally is sort of stone-agey. It chokes on any high-graphic games and Photoshop is a painstakingly slow program.

I finally got my desktop and only use the laptop when travelling... and the difference is phenomenal, like going from warp speed to a snail's pace.

Hey everyone!
I'm trying to decide what kind of computer to buy, so my question is what do you have and what would you recommend?
I'm interested in laptops with:
word processor and excel,
memory for pictures and video
and maybe gaming.
Thanks,
BL

I got a 2nd opinion from my boyfriend who is going to college to build computers and work on networks.
The main concern is if you want to do gaming the video card is already considered nearly outdated. Most games will require at least 128MB.
The rest depends on what you want. The burner is a bit slow if your going to be using it frequently or don't have alot of patience. If you have a g class router with fast dsl or cable you might want a 108Mbps card but 54Mbps isn't bad and fine for most uses. Occasionally I get a little lag when playing high graphic online games on Chris' laptop with 54Mbps and I never have that with mine. Just loading webpages you probably won't notice a difference and if you have a b class router it won't matter.
For the price it's pretty good but if you really want to do alot of gaming especially in the future you'd be better off improving the video card.

I hate HP and Compaq. I've had horrible luck with their computers and particularly their laptops. My boyfriend also hates his compaq laptop. My favorite so far is Dell and then Toshiba. The only issue I have had at all with my 2 Toshiba satellite laptops is if you put sideways pressure on the powercord it eventually causes it not to connect to the battery and you have to have a part replaced. Since I was always laying in bed or sitting on the couch at an odd angle to the power outlet and a ways away from it I put strain on the power cord and within a year on both of them had to have that part replaced but it's a small problem compared to all the repairs I've had done on HPs. With the HPs and Compaqs I had all sorts of system errors, hardware problems, and the power cords come unplugged constantly. My last compaq laptop had a harddrive error and didn't shut down properly but I thought it had. It was left running overnight without the cooling fan coming on. The next day the keyboard was melted and when I hit the power button it squished down inside the computer. When I took it apart the cover over the ram was melted and the motherboard was partially black. As for the HPs none have lasted more than a year and one took with it nearly 100 digital photos noone could get back. I'm very hard on laptops. I don't go anywhere without one and generally have them running 12-14hrs a day. Toshiba and Dell laptops have held up great and I even dropped one down the stairs, can't remember which one, without any problems except the power cords. I did smash the screen on the other Toshiba(currently using my newest Toshiba satellite A75) but that's because someone stepped on it that weighed like 200lbs. Poor laptop but it still ran. It just had cracks in the screen so it was hard to see. Since screen replacement was priced at starting somewhere around $500 I decided I could buy a new Toshiba for just a little more instead.

My mom had all HP desktops in her office and was always taking one in for repairs. We even took them to this guy that only works on HP computers and there was one he couldn't fix. It had some major file error but noone could find the file and every few months it would delete everything including the operating system. She's since replaced them with Dell and has yet to call about a problem with them.

i use a powerbook g4 but you can get an ibook for about $800. gaming won't be an issue once the intel based macs start shipping, and mac is the most stable and secure platform you can buy.

She got it for $725. total but got a million rebates and sale prices off the Dell website.

I got a HP pavillion zx 6000 a few weeks ago and think it´s one of my worst buys yet. Noisy, with a bad battery (about one hour on the net) and so on. I do love the laptop concept though.

So here I am once more...

Hi,

I just got a new laptop. It's a Dell. (please no comments from tech savvy people, I think they're great for people who just want to get on a computer and do what they want, specs and intricacies be damned)

inspiron 6000 i think.

15.4 inch monitor, 60GB hard drive, 512 MB memory, added Microsoft Office basic(word, excel, outlook) and bought photoshop elements discounted. It was maybe 1200 dollars, not too bad.

Back in the saddle!
