Lams is a pet shop! ![]() I don't mind the Hills and Waltham diets. They aren't perfect, but you'll be hard pressed to find a manufactured diet that is. (at least one that is readily available anyway) If you look hard enough, Eukanuba/Iams have vet diets too, and i'll bet they'll have a low calorie one. Last edited by Callatya at 19-Oct-2005 01:19 |

My friend has a cat that DOES have thyroid issues... I call him the fat cat. He's sweet and fluffy and cute, despite being overweight. He's got special food and meds, but he's always going to be chubby. One of their previous cats was fat, because it was the laziest cat you ever saw. It would eat the other cat's food ... the solution to that was to put the other cat's food on the counter because the fat cat couldn't JUMP that high anymore. ![]() On the other hand, my cousins have a cat that is fat because no one played with him much anymore. The cat was relegated to the ba ![]() ![]() Last edited by Kitten at 01-Nov-2005 14:25 ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |

Then sometimes we lie about what the cause was, things like terrorism , although to be honest your more likely to be hit by lightning than killed by a terrorist. Its wars that kill lots of people. That and politicians. Theyre big on the diplomacy thing. Say it straight and use a big stick, it keeps arguements small and short lived ![]() Last edited by longhairedgit at 31-Oct-2005 19:53 |

My sister in law is extreemely annoying to me. First she wanted a dog. it grew up and she lost interest in it. Now she has a cat. It was a kitten but now she wants a bird! We also had a rabbit running loose around the front yard that she was trying to own but I sent it to my neice that had just lost a rabbit. Last edited by sirbooks at 22-Oct-2005 22:43 |

All these diet foods are for people with sick animals or people who are too emotionally retarded to say no. It really annoys me when people get that stupid about animals, if its nagging you , tell it to shut the hell up like normal people do ![]() Overeating is usually a sign of boredom anyway, love it cuddle it and play with it. I find when all their nagging does is get them an unwanted cuddle and lots of fuss they give up ![]() Buy a water pistol ![]() ps i find really hurting peoples feelings by saying things like " so youre basically unfit to keep a cat then you moron" is much better than pandering to their stupid emotions and putting the cat on crappy diet food.Being rude to stupid people is a time honoured and effective technique, Its how humanity managed for thousands of years prior to the event of mindless capitalism . ![]() Last edited by longhairedgit at 21-Oct-2005 00:25 |

Im pretty sure the problem is because my brother & sister in law keep caving in and spoiling the little thing whenever it begs. Other than shooting the fuzball, are there any ways to stop a cat from continually begging for food? Last edited by Troy_Mclure at 17-Oct-2005 00:52 |

They sell IAMS to pretty much any store, but EUK is only sold to PET stores. Some brands won't even sell to chain pet stores (such as PETsMART, PetCo, etc.). Hills is OK. Yes, it is veterinary recommended, but only because Hills makes up deals with Vets. I will say that hills is not bad, but i wouldn't say it is good either. The odd thing about this is that the best brands tend to be the ones you see much advertisement of. Why? Well, take a look at the prices of ALL dog/cat foods. They are GENERALLY the same (usually not such a big different that it will make/break a company, but close enough none the less). So why can some companies afford ads when others cant? Because these companies use lesser ingrediants, and thus have a larger profit margine in the end. ALSO, money for some companies is used to research, thus cutting out on excess funds. |

To actually knock the weight off, as opposed to maintaining the current weight, check out the Waltham and Hills diets, cause they are going to be your best bet for causing weight loss, and still keeping the cat full (and therefore the owners happy) ![]() (sorry, i have a weird dislike for kitten food ![]() |

I'll look into that Iams food for the cat. They have been feeding it Eukanuba & Snappy Tom satchels. (in my experience with Greyhounds, Eukanuba is good but is also very fatty). |

Calilasseia![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() *Ultimate Fish Guru* Panda Funster Posts: 5496 Kudos: 2828 Votes: 731 Registered: 10-Feb-2003 ![]() ![]() | Here in the UK we have a range of veterinary approved foods you can get through pet stores. My LFS also handles the dog and cat trade (including several show kennels) and he stocks a range of foods that are graded according to age, lifestyle and breed. So for example, in the James Wellbeloved range, you have Kitten food, Active Cat 6 months to 5 years, Sedentary Cat 6 months to 5 years (usually aimed at those exotic Persian type cats), Adult Cat (5 years plus), a special food for a pregnant cat, one for a nursing cat suckling kittens, and a Senior Cat food for cats over 10 years old. I suspect there's similar differentiation in the other ranges too. One of the standing jokes in the trade is the proliferation of different foods for different ages and even genders ... one of the trade magazines over here apparently published a cartoon in which a dealer is saying to a cat owner "Oh what you need is our special Manic Sofa Scratcher and Anti-Hairball food with added Vitamin B12 and catnip ..." the cat owner then replies "Is that Kitten Sofa Scratcher, Adult Cat Sofa Scratcher or Senior Cat Sofa Scratcher?" You get the picture. If you think that's bad, wait till you get into dog food. My LFS told me that he now has on his books (and regularly bought by his customers) over two hundred different dog food types. He almost needs an in house IT department and databa ![]() ![]() |

Iams is the better end of grocery store food. You need to go to pet stores for the good stuff. One thing to look at is the ingreadiants. Corn is bad. It is used for two things: filler for the food (most animals can't process most of corn) and fattening (starch, part of corn animals can take in, unfortunatly). That is usually the indecator of quality. There are other factors, but I don't know them as well as others... Nutro, Wellness, Diamond, "Chicken Soup for the Cat/Dog lovers soul" is good too. The first three have different varieties, but Chicken Soup only has adult and kitten/puppy variety. However, for an animal with good weight, i think its great. Depending on the age of the kitten, you can go with an adult food for overweight, less active, or combo. But only if the kitten is closer to 1.5 years. If it is still a young kitten, make sure it is being fed kitten food. Again, go with a good brand food. Otherwise, it becomes owner's will. Good luck Last edited by Racso at 17-Oct-2005 10:14 |

Wet is about 80% water, so if the cat fills up on water, all the better. Adult cats, we feed 1/4 cup of friskies adult (not the best, PurinaONE/ Eukanuba/ Iams would be my faves) and 100g of wet food a day, along with about 20g misc human food (the good stuff, not offcuts or fat) and that keeps the kitties weight OK ![]() If they can afford/be bothered with buying from vets, Hills has some decent low calorie stuff, but it'll be a challenge to get the cat to eat it, especially if the owners are weak-willed where kitty is concerned ![]() Last edited by Callatya at 17-Oct-2005 11:17 |
