Just out of curiousity, has there every been a captive tiger shark? What about a bull shark. I know the was a Great White in California, but it got realeased. There was also a whale shark in Japan. What other sharks have not been kep in captivity? Threasher sharks? Greenland sharks? Basking sharks?

No, they are strictly pelagic. Makos aren't as appreciative of the cold, so I hear. 50-60ish is optimal, I believe, as both species are readily apparent in my area. There are bulls in SWSD as we speak. They are hardy and well adapted for aquarium life.

Threshers are highly pelagic

Really? That's interesting considering that fishermen on long island are usually catch more of them then they do mako. I figured it was because they stayed close to sure.

What about bull sharks?

No, there are definitely tiger sharks being raised in captivity, as are there many that are not found in captive settings, especially several rare deep sea sharks. Threshers are highly pelagic and their tails do not make them any more accommodating. The probably have similar problems dealing with the walls as do most other oceanic sharks. Frankly, I was surprised the great white even survived that long in the MB Aquarium.

That's funny, I thought all sharks except tigers, whites, whales, megamouths, andbasking were kept in captivity. It seems like I was wrong several times.
I could see why the other two were never kept in captivity, but why not threashers? I assumed the care would be something like a sand-tiger.

Where? I have seen tigers in the Mauii, New Jersey, and I THINK, but am not sure, Monterey aquariums. Epcot had one for some time, too, I believe. Threshes are a no go, and I believe makos have suffered the same fate in captivity as previous white sharks did; navigated into walls and died shortly thereafter. Greenland sharks, I would assume, are far too large, dangerous, and difficult to obtain to even ponder housing them in captivity.

How did they keep a whale shark?

I dunno, I'm pretty mich with RustyBlade on this one. A lot of these sharks just shouldn't be kept in captivity. I know some like nurse sharks and sand- tiger sharks are common and do well in captivity, but basking sharks? whale sharks? great whites? hammerheads? I feel like their size and behavior mandate that they stay in the ocean, not a big pool in seaworld.

This is from TheBostonChannel online news:

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/4746503/detail.html

I'd be interested in seeing other pics of this, because from this angle that shark looks ENORMOUS! I'm sure it's big, but doesn't it look almost too big to be real in the photo?

I must admit, however, I do get kind of sad when I see a shark - or any other fish for that matter - get caught and killed. Think about ow long it must've taken for this animal to grow to this size.. what are the odds? Kind of like that giant catfish caught a few weeks ago, or the giant lobster. It's a shame, really... but interesting nonetheless. Just goes to show you, the ocean is so vast you never know what's out there...

Too true robby
Funny thing is that Australia's best live great white shark expert and leading the way to conserving these beautiful creatures was once a victim of a shark himself and was very nearly killed, Rodney Fox. Fear drives people to kill and fear can be extremely ignorant.

*woops, sorry for my rant, I just feel very strongly on this one *

I agree RustyBlade..but i think the people will not change.....As soon as the news says about shark attack they go out and try to find the shark, they come back with 5 or 10 dead sharks instead

Well, since they did kill it and there's no going back on that, I at least hope they ate it and used the skin or something and didn't just cut off the jaws and throw the rest back.

I just read elsewhere that a few years ago during the same tournament someone caught a record size mako shark... something like 1,200 pounds. Which by mako standards is immense! I couldn't in good conscience kill something like that... or any shark for that matter. They're rare enough as it is.

Grr that poor shark . I can only hope he was at the end of his lifetime anyway.....they used diamond line to bring him in...really hope they didnt leave any of that hanging about in the water ] that stuff is tough to cut thru and some dive knives wont even cut thru it.
