Thanks for the suggestions and info.

I've been having horrible stomach pains for the past three hours, and I don't know why. I actually thought I was getting better until they came, but now I feel like I'm going to die.

No nausea or anything, just extreme pain. It sort of comes in waves.

Well I'm pretty much better now... My doctor says it wasn't a very severe case, but it was bad enough for me. Six days... Ughh.

my friend refused to have her meningitis shot cos she was scared of needles. Now, I'm one of those people who catches every disease that there is a vaccine to that I havent had, if you see what I mean. I got whooping cough after my mum refused to let me have the jab for it.

Anyway, so I had my meningitis jab, knowing my luck, and my antibiotic allergies, figured better safe than sorry.

Was my friend who spent a week in intensive care with Meningitis C (i think) Met up with her afterwards and she just said "I'm not scared of needles anymore"

yuck, not nice disease. But for the viral kind, my best advice is to follow doctors advice and stay rehydrated and comfy.

Back in November 1994 I had the bacterial variety. That was fun. Not.

Body temperature hitting 104°F, and nice hallucinations involving the nurses turning into giant cockroaches. But, typical of me, my response was to try and determine which species of cockroach the nurses were turning into by counting the hairs on the tegulae. Sometimes pays to be an amateur entomologist

Oh, and I can tell you right now that intramuscular Methicillin shots in the buttocks hurt like mad.

Did you have to get a spinal tap?

Luckily I didn't. Meningitis is pretty easy to diagnose actually, and the doctor knew that since I wasn't having seizures and dying (on my second day of being sick), that it was viral meningitis instead of bacterial.

Spinal taps are mostly used now just to figure out which kind of bacteria is causing the infections in patients with bacterial meningitis.

Today I am starting to feel better though... My headache isn't as bad as it has been.

Sorry to hear you aren't well. Did you have to get a spinal tap? All I have to say about that is "OUCH." I've heard they aren't pleasant at all. I hope you are feeling better soon. About the viral/bacterial thing, my mom had bacterial meningitis when she was around 4 I think, had seizures and jaundice from it and is lucky she recovered completely. Good thing you don't have that.

You'll want to be taking a NSAID, something that will reduce inflammation, fever and relieve pain in general. In other words, Aleve, Advil, ASA, whatever. Tylenol/acetaminophen won't do it, it doesn't reduce swelling and inflammation (I have had to take a lot of pain stuff so I am pretty familiar with them). If you're taking OTC NSAIDS and are in a lot of pain that isn't being relieved by them, ask a pharmacist or go back to your doctor for a prescription strength one.

I don't know how you can drink powerade. All of those sport drinks taste like salt to me. Blech.

Good luck and I hope you're feeling better soon.

For comparison, Bacterial (Meningococcal) Meningitis from the same source.

If its in your spine, you are probably going to end up with pain through most of your body. Pay attention to where it is as if anything happens and they need to know where the problem is, knowing the precise location of the pain will help a lot.

And steady on the powerade. I don't know if drinking sportsdrinks is the best thing for soething that has fluid as part of the problem. I'd be going with something wetter, like water. Run it past your doctor, maybe the sportsdrinks are actually better than water to draw the fluid off...?

I'm sorry, it sounds like it really sucks. Keep the remote close and have a big rest.

I had it in the middle of my first grade year, but that was over 20 years ago, and I had polio at the same time(faulty vaccine). I do not remember much about it. Good luck, get well soon. Be sure your doctors know about the pain.

I've been sick with viral Meningitis for the past couple of days, and even taking tons of (OTC) pain medications isn't helping with my headache or back pain...

Has anyone here had this before? If so, what helped with the pain? Every time I get up after sitting for a while, my head literally feels like it's about to explode (Meningitis causes brain swelling).

So far the only things that have brought me temporary reief are watching "South Park", "Cannibal! The Musical", eating fajitas, and drinking Powerade (Mountain Blast... None of that "Fruit Punch" crap).

I hated it. Was the summer in between middle school and high school and I missed out on a lot. Caught it the last week of school by drinking from a friend's pop. She barely got sick at all I end up in bed for two months. Was one of those that is just not fair things.

On an interesting note as an adult they were doing bloodwork on me a few years ago and noticed elevated levels of the epstein bar virus and something else and asked me if I had ever had a bad case of meningitus. It is something that will actually change some of the levels in your bloodwork permanently. I guess I shouldn't say just a little, normal human levels were between .90 and 1.10, or somewhat similar, my level was over 7.0 which was the upper limit for the test.

Have you tried taking 2-3 Aleve, and drinking plenty of fluids...that would be my best suggestion...and yes it's safe to take the 2-3 at one time it makes it close to the prescription strength, and you should be ok to take a dose that strong in the morning and one at night Plenty of fluids, and even though it may not be "life threatening" call you doctor or medical person up and see if they have any other suggestions...By all means feel better soon, being sick is never funheidi

They usually monitor the situation as it can worsen into paralasis and even death.

Fortunately it's only bacterial Meningitis that does that... It's sort of like dropsy in fish - it's not really a disease in itself, just a condition. Some of the things that cause it are much more serious than others. Viral Meningitis is pretty much non-life-threatening, unless you have like AIDS or something.

Isn't the worse form bacterial, not viral?

Yes, which is why I'm not worried about dying.

Oooo I had that for an entire summer, nasty stuff.

The entire summer?

How did you live? It's generally supposed to go away in like five to seven days (I think).

Oooo I had that for an entire summer, nasty stuff. They wanted to hospitolize me at one point. I remember living off of chocolate milkshakes, my throat was so swollen I could not swallow anything. Just don't even bother with getting up unless you need to use the restroom, your body will need a lot of rest to recover.

Hi,
Memingitis is an infection of the the meninges.
The meninges is a water tight film or lining that coats
the inside of the spine and skull. The brain and
spinal cord are all one system so to speak and are
bathed in fluid. The Meninges keep the fluid from leaking
out. In this case the cause of the infection is a virus
hence the name viral meningitis.

Here is more information on the disease:
[link=http://www.astdhpphe.org/infect/vmenin.html]http://www.astdhpphe.org/infect/vmenin.html" style="COLOR: #FF00FF[/link]

I hope you are under a doctors care. They usually monitor
the situation as it can worsen into paralasis and even
death. They should be able to at least treat the
symptoms while the body heals itself.

Frank
