I used to collect several local species. There's not really much to it; a sponge for water supply and abundant food should yield good results.

...And they don't really do much either.

They pretty much just hide all day, and usually when you pick them up they will curl up. Also, most of them can excrete nasty smelling/toxic substances when they feel threatened.

And regarding tank size, it needn't be very large; a medium sized Kritter Keeper will house one to four specimens, depending on what species you find/buy.

I wouldn't suggest them. If you really want a wierd insect pet, get a tarantula or a scorpion. The schock value aside, they are more outgoing pets than millipedes.

Centipedes are likely going to be more active, but they are predators and require live insects to eat (that's a problem for some people). Also, it's going to be a "look but don't touch" kind of thing, because nearly all of them are venomous and can inflict very painful bites (I believe that some species' bites require hospitalization as well).

All centipedes have maxallipids (sp?), thus, all are poisonous, IIRC. The smaller millipedes will release a musk that is barely noticable, and in any case, would much rather roll into a ball than spray. Larger, millipedes, however, can give you quite a whiff. Thus, given that you do not attempt to apply any sort of sharp blow to said millipede's head, it will not attempt to release it's hallucinogenic payload. They are also far more personable than other arthropods of similar nature and build.

Most millipede toxin is actually a cyanide derivative. They release it copiously after death. Lemurs even use then to get high and mong out in trees.

Giant african millipedes are cool though, and they breed really fast, just put some moist peat ,some rotting wood, and some leaf litter in a tank and watch em go. Give em a bit or fresh fruit and veg too, but beware of insecticides.
