Just got a call from my Mum. My uncle's ex-wife's (so my used-to-be-aunt's) daughter was killed in a motorcycle accident over the weekend
Apparently they were hit by another motocyclist, and his bike took out the first motorcycle and his body took out the 2nd. My Aunt's daughter was on the first as a pillion. The driver (her husband) escaped with a broken ankle. the pair behind, I think the driver was killed and the pillion is fighting for her life.

All this hassle about cars looking out for bikes and now bikes are taking out bikes No wonder nobody wants me to get my licence

So, funeral is on Wednesday after Xmas as the coroner has to release the body

I didn't know her well, but for my aunt, what is appropriate for such a thing? What on earth do you say?

Its always hard to find something to say Calla.
When my brother passed away I found the most comforting thing was a hug. There were words that went with it but those were all a blur.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Awww calla

I agree, hugs are worth a thousand words .

It seems to be the time for accidents, there've been a number of fatals in the DC area shutting down major roadways. Todays involved a schoolbus .

That's aweful Calla. Sorry to hear about your loss!
I agree with Lindy. . . a hug is very appropriate.

Are you able to make the funeral or is it far away?

Calla, how terrible for everyone. A sincere "I'm sorry for your loss." covers it.

Also, you can send a potted plant instead of cut flowers. Recently I sent an orchid in flower to the house of the bereaved instead of flowers to the church. I asked for delivery the day after the funeral. My thinking was - visitors have left and there is little distraction for the grieving, nothing left for them to 'organise'. So a delivery on a flat day will be a welcome distraction.

Jan's orchid will flower each year around the time of the loss of Laurie.

A loss is terrible at any time of year but especially difficult now. Thinking of you and your extended family.

I can relate Callatya. My friend died on a trailbike. Seeing his coffin with a motorcycle helmet on it leaving the church is one of the sadest memories I have.

My sympathies and condolances.

unfortunately I can't make the funeral, I have to distract my brother on the day who has some serious issues with death and life in general. He hasn't been told yet, and I really don't know what to think of that.

ah that sucks calla i am anxious to get back on my bike, but the people around here barely see the other cars on the road, so i'm not sure how much time i'd get to ride where i felt comfortable. but i have to agree that if you have nothing to say, a simple "sorry" and a hug goes much further than anything you might come up with.

Hi Calla,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss, motorcycles scare the hell out of me and this is something I have to deal with everyday as Russell rides a bike. Its so hard to try not to think that one day there maybe a knock at the door and well you can guess the rest. Big hugs to you and your family Calla.

That's awful Calla. Accidents are horrible, hateful things - it always seems such a waste when someone loses their life in that way, especially a young, healthy person.

Wish-ga, that's a lovely idea and you are right, it really means something to have something that you can keep for a longer time than a bunch of flowers. When my father died a couple of months ago, a colleague did exactly what you did, gave me a potted white orchid in flower. It looked beautiful when it was in flower, but even after the blossoms dropped off, I could plant it in my garden and I know that when its flowering season comes around again, it will be a nice reminder of my dad.

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear of accidents and especially motorcycle
accidents. I rode for ten years and thank God, my only
"accident" was my own dumb fault. I rode in the winter
on snow packed, icy roads, and wound up in a snow bank.

I must say that I had complete confidence in my machine
and my abilities. Frankly, it was the other guy that scared
the heck out of me. Folks just don't see motorcycles and
think nothing of pulling out in front of them or crowding
them from the back even closer than they would another car.

I had more fun, and enjoyed the road more on the bike than
cooped up in a cage.

Again, I'm sorry Callatya.
Sincerely
Frank

Thank you all.

I am sending her a card and arranging a small potted plant to arrive at her house on the day after the funeral.

We have friends who ride for pleasure, and i've been out with them a few times, but even then getting taken out by cars is something they are very aware of. About 50% of their attention was on the cars around them at all times, trying to anticipate their next move and ways to avoid accidents etc. Its not an easy way to get around.

Our only car accident in our current car was with a similar sort of thing where a guy on a trialbike came flying around a corner, slammed on the brakes and bounced onto our bonnet. Thankfully we'd had time to stop, but he was just going way too fast and we could well have killed him if we didn't have a vague idea that he'd not be able to control his vehicle.

I dunno, I know that car drivers are responsible for many bike accidents, but this whole thing makes me wonder how many of them just do stupid things and take themselves out. *sigh*

when i was still in milwaukee a guy was riding his crotch rocket down our street at 80+mph and a car pulled out in front of him. the biker was killed very instantly and did a fair amount of damage to the car in the process. yes, sometimes people just cause their own accidents on bikes but it's still a big risk you take every time you get on the back of one. if you drive responsibly and safely, you get home in one piece. if you drive like an idiot, you're just asking to be killed. no matter what you're driving...
