Hi,
With all that packed into a box, I guess it would be safe
to say that you don't just use it to check into FP.

doh! I would love a coolermaster hs, but they foul capacitors on my mobo. Also, I move my comp around a lot, and I dont want lots of metal strapped on to my mobo.

Oh well 45-55C with the stock AMD heatsink and Arctic Silver isnt bad I guess.....

Got a coolermaster copper heatsink with a 90mm fan, complete with backplate so i can tighten it right down. Slapped some silver polymer heatsink compound on it, and voila, problem mostly solved.

It idles now at 30-32 deg C, a drop of ~20c, and now at load it's running at 52-55 deg c, a drop of almost 30c. I'm much happier now

Ok, got my sound working, had to use the onboard audio with x64 drivers from ASUS, so that's taken care of.

Video card mfg is putting one out soon, so i'll just have to wait a little longer on that one.

Got an antivirus that works with her too Symantec is my antivirus of choice, but they don't have a single license program that works with 64 bit systems. They've got one that does, but it's a business/corporate edition that you need to buy 10 licenses of, and at 50+ bucks a pop, not my style Went with nod32, a program by eset until symantec comes out with a single license, or until i get my greedy little hands on a corporate edition license.

Tae - laptops aren't for designing anything Get a desktop and keep your current lappy for everything else.

I need a new 'puter something shocking...my one and a half year old HP laptop just isn't cutting it anymore. It's fine for basic things but designing a magazine on there is a nightmare - was taking 5 minutes to perform the most basic Photoshop operations on any file more than about 10mb I'm not sure if upgrading the RAM would help - it's only 256mb in there at the moment, but the hard drive is only 20gb as well, so that might be part of the problem.

I'm almost 100% decided that my next computer purchase is going to be a Mac. It's long been known that they are superior machines for design work; I use one at work (am using it right now in fact ) and I fell in love with it as soon as i got used to the differences. The only question I would have is to the upgradeability of Macs...I wouldn't want to have to buy a new system every few years just because I couldn't have individual components replaced. Although, from all that I hear Macs generally have longer lives than PCs.

I'm rather attached to the portability of my laptop though...but i know I'll have to pay a great deal to get a design-capable portable Mac...and i so love the G5 desktops as well.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread, it just got me musing (and fantasising!) about the decisions I have to make on my next computer purchase. Good luck with the new machine Timmy - from the very little that i understand about computers it sounds like an impressive system!

One word:

Timmy that isn't a word. Hehe.

Anyway, glad to hear you finally did it, I know you mentioned something about changing around your computer for awhile. Cool deal.

Finally

It was with a heavy heart that i tore apart my old computer to make way for the new and improved components...

Out with the Tyan Tiger 230 133mhz FSB motherboard outfitted with dual Pentium 3 1.0ghz processors, 1.5gb of pc133 SDRAM, 20gb maxtor 7200rpm UATA hdd, ATI Radeon 8500 128mb video card, 300w PSU, turtle beach santa cruz 5.1 sound card, cdrw and floppy drives, running windows XP Pro Corporate edition.

In with the Asus PW5D2 premium 1066/800/533mhz FSB motherboard, single P4 3.2 prescott processor, 1.0gb corsair DDR2 800mhz RAM, 74gb western digital raptor 10,000rpm SATA hdd, ATI All-in-Wonder X600 Pro 256mb DDR video card, 550watt sparkle power PSU, same turtle beach santa cruz sound card, CD/DVD RW drive, 7 in one floppy drive (3.5" floppies plus memory sticks, smartcards and stuff, pretty neat) running windows XP Pro 64 bit.

One word:

My new case is coming in a few days, so i stuffed all that in my old case for now to get it set up and running, then will transfer it all to the new case when it arrives.

I haven't had time to play around too much yet, i'm still finding software that supports the 64 bit O/S and installing drivers, but so far me likes The new sparkle power PSU is like a boat anchor compared to the old one, and for good reason. Not only does it have more power, but the electrical insulation is much better than the old one.

The motherboard itself is a work of art, incorporating ASUS's new becool thermal coating or some crap. it's garbage, don't listen to it, it doesn't do a thing. It has passive cooling with decently sized heatsinks on the south and northbridges, but the board stays pretty cool so i'm not going to worry about it... yet.

The processor runs a bit hot for my liking, around 50c. Apparently that's normal for these processors, but i just can't stand that. The HSF that intel supplies is alright, but the way it attatches to the motherboard is crap. It doesn't create a strong enough mechanical bond between the CPU and heatsink to be as efficient as it can, plus it's too light. I am hoping go have all that change as soon as i get the new case and peltier cooling system.

Anywho, i just wanted to say i got it all and it's running well so far.

I'll keep y'alls updated

A happy Timmy,
