All the passengers aboard a jet that skidded off a runway and burst into flames at Pearson International Airport Tuesday survived the ordeal, according to fire officials on the scene.

There were 14 minor injuries, however.
The Air France jet burst into flames after skidding off a runway at Toronto's Pearson Airport Tuesday.

One passenger aboard the Air France Airbus A340, Roel Bramar, told CBC News that he saw lightning just as the plane landed in a torrential downpour at about 3:50 p.m.

"I'm sure that the bad weather was responsible," said Bramar, who was not injured and managed to scramble off the plane by means of an emergency chute. He was the second person off the plane, he said.

Flight 358 from Paris had been scheduled to arrive at Toronto at 3:35 p.m. EDT. Some reports said it landed safely, but then something went badly wrong.

The plane skidded off Runway 24 Left, an east-west runway laid out parallel to one of Toronto's busiest roads, Highway 401. It ended up in the Etobicoke Creek ravine, a small valley at the far west end of the airport, the aircraft's fuselage tipped down and its tail in the air.

"We had a hell of a roller-coaster going down the ravine," Bramar said. "All I could think of was 'Get off!'"

Rescue crews are still on the scene.

Yeah - they just made that update. I am really relieved.

Been following BBC, CNN and Reuters on this one. Got a friend who lives in the Toronto area and travels abroad a lot with her 10 year old daughter ... waiting for E-Mail reply to hear they're OK and weren't involved (fingers crossed) ...

However, it shows how far we've come in terms of airliner design - 20 years ago, there would have been no survivors from a crash like that, and now, everyone managed to get out. Trouble is, a lot of hard lessons in the past went to making that possible.

Someone was very definitely watching over those passengers that time ...

Very very good thing that nobody was killed or seriously injured!

Unfortunately in late March this year there was a small plane crashed less than a mile from where I lived on campus (in a spot not 50 feet from where I was standing for a field exercise a week and a half before, no less), and both passengers in that were killed instantly. Also weather-related, presumably. Pretty scary for me, because one of my best friends is a pilot I still ride planes, but thinking about crashes like that, I can really appreciate how good it is that nobody got seriously hurt.

Hmm, I work for Airbus.. Its a shame but a very good job no one was killed. Safety is THE most important factor when building an aircraft and accidents like this are taken into account during the design. The 340 is a very modern safe aircraft so i'm not entirely surprised it didnt explode. Wouldn't like to have been on it though.

There is something weird about it though, something isn`t right.

When a plane crashes and the emergency doors are opened they should have the slides come out for people to get out but there wasn`t. What happend to them?

It as if something failed but we don`t know yet. I know someone, Neil, who works for BA and on there planes and he was telling me this.
