I am looking into a new TV. Looking at spending between $2000 - $2500 or a little more on it.

Size I am looking at the biggest one. I would like at least a 66cm one if not bigger.

I have been looking at an LG (42inch Plasma) for $2800.

What is the difference and pros and cons of these????
What should I be looking for and what out for?

I don't know the officials, and I don't have either, BUT this is what I have heard from MANY DIFFERENT sources:

Plasma wears out a LOT faster than ANY other TV. I've heard 6 years is an OLD plasma.

When ticker bars (like those on CNN for stocks or ESPN for sports scores) scroll for a few minutes or more, they leave dark areas where the tickers were when you change the channel. I think it has to do with anything that stay a certain color for a while. (I.E. if you pause a movie for a few minutes, then press play, it will shade the screen like where you paused it)

Plasma can break easily.

NOTE: this are things I've just heard. I cannot justify them, but the only reason I've posted them is because I've heard the same exact thing from multiple, unrelated people. I don't know the validity on them, so just take keep them in mind.

my buddy racso is correct. Plasmas have a nasty habit of getting burn in, something screen savers were developed to guard against, but that was back in the day when CRT monitors had a little film of plastic on them, not so anymore.

he's also correct that a plasma tv has a shorter lifespan as compared to LCD's, with them lasting about half the span of a comparable LCD. LCD's also perform better in brigher ambient light, and are lighter in terms of weight. Also, LCD's are more friendly with HDTV, offering higher resolutions.

Prices are dropping like rocks as technology advances, and if i were you, it'd be an LCD just to forego the risk of burn in on a plasma.

Oh man Im getting a new tv this weekend too so its cool to see ur thread here.

Im getting a LG 37 inch LCD (need a drooling emoticon)

Yep plasma = not good. If they were heaps cheaper than LCD there might be a reason to get them, but they're not.

therefore LCD = GOOD

I think LG is an excellent brand. Unfortunately they do cost more but they are quality. The major appliance stores usually have packages (TV, DVD, stand etc) which help lower the cost.

The package Im getting is the LCD, stand, DVD recorder for £1800. Heres a pic

Man Im all excited now. Gonna go look at more Tv stuff...

I have that t.v.

It really is a good one...best t.v I have ever had and the HD looks pretty good on it too

[edit]sorry for the semi-difficult to read colors

With some googling I found this nice little comparo between Plasma and LCD on ZDNet:

It may help give you some clarity on what you want to buy.

Hi,
Susan and I looked at a TV for the house in the mountains
and decided upon a 70 inch Sony LCD. Two things made up
our minds.
One, the picture was far far better than the
Plasma 70 incher.
Two, (probably most important for us) as the elevation
goes up, the picture quality degrades.
With the increased elevation the gap between
the gas molecules expands and the power supply is worked
harder and harder it begins to make audible noise, and
the picture degrades.
Most are made to work at altitudes to 4000 feet, only a
few will work to 8000 feet. We live at 10,000 feet.
The folks here at Circuit City in Denver have had so many
returned, that they won't sell to folks who live in certain
communities, and only stock those that are good to 8000ft.

It's in, hooked up to Direct TV and has HDEF and suround
sound. We love it.. and, it drives the "tyrant" (the
house cat) nutz while we watch Star Wars and a space
ship goes over her head!
