Does anyone have experience shipping live fish? I've had them shipped to me before, so I pretty much know the drill. Quarentine the fish 2-4 days, use a foam insulated box, 1/3 fresh water to 2/3 air in the bags, triple bag the fish. Does this sound about right?

My only question is how to ensure that there is enough O2 in the bags for the fish? I have no access to pure pressurized O2...

Thanks

bag em up and take the box and all to the lfs and have them fill each with o2. they may charge you for it, but at least you'll know they're going to be taken care of.

You can also get some of those Bag Buddies from drsfostersmith. Here's a link: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12092&Ntt=bag%20buddies&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=2004&Nty=1

Thanks for the tips:

The Bag Buddies, what do they do? You drop them into the bag and they release O2 into the water or up into the bag where you're supposed to try to keep it in?

NowherMan6,

There is also a new form of bag that actually breathes air throught the material. I have to go and find the reference, I think it was in TFH about 2 or 3 months back.

These bags are well tested and around since years. The only reason why they are not used everywhere is because they don't suit the "classic" shipping procedures, like containers that have to allow for air reaching the bag, so no tight packing of bags next to each other.

Here's a quote from the link about what Bag Buddies do:

Make sure your fish move safely from their accustomed environment, whether across the room or across the country. Pre-measured tablet adds oxygen and has a calming effect on fish during transport. Reduces stress, promotes slime coat, and combats ammonia buildup. Also removes harmful chlorine, neutralizes harmful metals, and adds beneficial electrolytes. Tablet eliminates guesswork for precise use. Can be used with freshwater or saltwater fish.

I think this is what most fish breeders use when shipping fish....the water in my pleco's bag was blue when he got here and I know that something was adding to rduce the shipping stress on him and increase the O2 of the water.

Little fish-Kordon Breather Bags.

I just started using these. In the past I used Bag Buddies and double bagged fish, filling the bag similar to how many lfs do.

Thanks crazyred.

I'm interested now in these Kordon Breather bags. How would these be used differently than regular plastic bags? I had planned on placing the regular bags in insulated boxes, like when i receive fish from elsewhere. How would these new bags change that?

Theresa, if you don't mind and if you have the time, would you mind explaining in a bit of detail how your ship your fish?

Thanks everyone, I appreciate any help on this

NowherMan6,

From my limited memory (old man, you know ):

The most important difference is that there is zero air in the bag. All oxygen needed is assimilated through the material directly. That is the reason why at least part of the bag cannot be covered with anything that wouldn't let air through. I have seen it being packed kind of like a six-pack, with some square cardboard separating the fish bags. Around this cardboard is then addtional packing material for insulation.
