Looks like this weekend im going to be a godfather, but I have to say Im a little worried. Im the most irreligious SOB you ever met, despite having survived a christening at a very young age without catching fire or turning to dust.

What goes on at christenings , what will be expected of me if anything and what makes a good christening gift?

Honoured though I am to be asked by my best buddy to be godfather to his firstborn daughter , Im not sure exactly how much use I can be as a spiritual guide for the kid.

If the kids asks me about the birth and life of christ ill probably put Monty Pythons Life of Brian on the dvd player, and if they quiz me about the bible ill probably tell then that it was written at least 400 years after the events happened and to take it all with a pinch of salt.

Presumably I have to get through the ceremony by just lying blankly to the priest, and biting my lip to surpress my urges to speak and argue . Oh well, wont be the first time

Maybe I can just get away with being a camera bore, taking pictures of everything and not speaking.

Worried from cheltenham .lol.

Probably just in the greatest sense of the duty, you would be responsible for making sure she gets the spiritual guidance that her family would provide if they were there. Thats like making sure she attends the church they are members of ect. Maybe staying in touch with the pastor or who ever is a in charge. Communication with youth group leader and basically moral support unless the family requests somthing other. Don't be shy about asking what they think the "honor" should mean because it is very important in the event something should ever happen to them.
Ceremony could be more involved but usually just acknowledging that you accept the responsibility should anything happen to the parents is about it.
A good gift is a cross usually for sale in the church basement or something of that nature. Don't run out and buy a pony. LOL

Congratulations Longhairdgit ----

I too am becoming a god parent this weekend. My Aunt and Uncle have been trying to have a baby forever... they are also on the adoption list. Well my Aunt is pregnant... 8 weeks and the baby's heart rate is extremely healthy at 170. That same afternoon, they got a call from the adoption agency to come pick up their daughter who was born the night before in Pennsylvania! She was born on March 9, 2006 and they took her home from the hosiptal yesterday. Because she was born out of state, they need to stay in PA for 10-14 days but all the paperwork, etc will be signed tomorrow by the birth mother and they will not have much to do with her (birth mother) after that.

Her name is Katherine Joan Lawrie -- ( "Katie" )

i say, spoil the kid, takes billions of pictures, and the occasional trip to an amusement park should suffice.. just be the one with candy in your hands at all times...

Congrats git. Gorgey bubba! As godfather you are bound by duty to buy the kewl gift each birthday.

rjm - that is great news for your aunty and uncle on baby Katie. And to you for being the godmother. They can still adopt when expecting? (asking because adoption unfortunately for prospective parents is more and more rare in my country, very difficult for would-be parents).

Those two kids will be very very close in age... chaos very soon. Welcome chaos after so long yearning. A wonderful time for everyone. Praying for your aunt's continued health for her work in progress bundle.

are you aware you just called me Michelle? cuz.. few people live to call me that.. just so you know

hungover pictures always seem to reflect the essence of the moment... or your stupidity from the night before. either way.. they make for good photography!
