For a quick rundown of some groups that just come to mind:
Rock:
3 Doors Down, New Found Glory, Adema, Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, Barenaked Ladies, Blind Melon, Blink 182, Bowling for Soup, Bush, Chevelle, Coldplay, Counting Crows, Crazytown, Creed, Dashboard Confessional, Disturbed, Eve 6, Foo Fighters, Fuel, Godsmack, Goo Goo Dolls, Good Charlotte, Green Day, Hoobastank, Incubus, JET, Jimmy Eat World, Korn, Lifehouse, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Lit, Live, Maroon 5, Matchbox Twenty, metallica, Nickelback, Nirvana, Oasis, P.O.D., Papa Roach, Pearl Jam, Puddle of Mudd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, White Zombie, Saliva, Seether, Sevendust, Simple Plan, Smashmouth, Soundgarden, Staind, Sublime, Sugar Ray, Sum 41, Switchfoot, System of a Down, The Offspring, Toadies, Tool, Trapt, Vertical Horizon, Yellowcard

That's just a list of rock bands. There's also R&B groups, country bands, classic rock groups, or oldies groups. To determine the all-time best, we would have to have a whole set of playoffs for the different genres, and that's just using bands, not including single acts such as Elvis. For this to actually be a good set, we would need serious organization and time dedicated to each genre. Winners of each genre would then have to compete against each other to determine who the best of all rock was, all hip-hop, etc. After that, a final thread would have to be dedicated to finding the all-time best...


Just a couple thoughts...

EDIT:As for not including the likes of Green Day because you feel they are junk, exactly what criteria do they not meet that was surpassed by the fantastic likes of Tenacious D? I thought that was why we want to include tons of bands so that the votes will determine the winners/losers, not the coordinator's personal opinion...

If you want to make this fair to those who choose to participate and really make this represent the "best" band/musician, you probably should start over with a new contest.

Make a new thread, and give participants a week to choose two to five bands (depending on how many people you think will participate) that they want represented in the contest. Once the deadline has passed then the contest can start, and nobody should have any complaints about which bands were and weren't included. If you like, you can also include a default list of popular/once popular bands as well, the obvious choices for the competition.

That just seems like a better way to decide on a "true" winner, at least from our music choices at F.P.

I am open to suggestions to bands, I guess (REM, Pink Floyd, etc.), just not Green day, as, frankly, they ARE junk.
