My partner and I are considering moving down to Sydney (we live in Brisbane at the moment), because the job prospects for both us are a lot better down there, plus we are both keen for a change. Of course, there's a lot to consider such as the higher cost of living vs. the wages we can expect, the logistics and costs of actually moving, and the fact that we are still very much in love with Brisbane (but hey, it'll always be there, and we're too young to be afraid of leaving!). Right now I'm trying to figure out what will be best in terms of our apartment here in Brisbane, whether we would keep it, rent it out and offset some of the rental costs in Sydney (plus our mortgage), or sell it and buy again, but the difference in real estate costs between the two cities is astronomical and we probably can't afford that option. I do so love living in my own place though, and hate renting - but again, I'm too young to be tied down by such an idea!

Anyway, I'm getting off track, but I just have a quick question for those who know Sydney quite well (I've only visited a few times). I want to have a look at real estate websites so I can get an idea of housing costs down there. Could someone give me a bit of a list of suburbs that are within 10-20 minutes drive of the CBD? I already know places like Drummoyne, Newtown, Balmain, Surry Hills, Glebe etc., but have no idea where else to look, and want to make sure I'm not missing out on places that are cheaper than those suburbs but still a reasonable distance from the city. I wouldn't mind living near the beach either!

Hi Just beginning good to see you're looking to move down to sydney! i know you will love it!! its a bustling busy place but i couldnt imagine living anywhere else!

In regards to living close to the city but close to the beach at the same time you could always look at coogee, bondi junction and maroubra if you would like to live near the beach thse are all nice areas and just a bus ride to/from the city.
I dont know what rent wuld be like though...
You could always look on a real estate website

I just spoke to someone at work who lives in maroubra and she pays $400 week rent for an apartment in maroubra on the beach and its about a 20 min drive into the city.

Something like that Tim - certainly not unusual in Sydney! (And even Brisbane, but you would be living in a pretty nice house for that much).

I think we would have to be trying for about $300 max in rent, otherwise it wouldn't be financially viable, especially as our place would probably only rent for about $230-$250. But I've seen a few places for under that which look quite suitable - we only really need 2 bedrooms, and are quite happy to live in an apartment (the dream, of course, would be to live in one of those gorgeous little old terraces that are so great about the southern states, but I realise that just like our Queenslanders, they would be more expensive than other apartments/homes).

Man that's a lot...

Around here you can get 3 bedrooms with a really big spacious living room, a dining room and nice kitchen for less than 900 a month.
