It is a wonder there was not the "Big Bang" Have you never been told keep all electrical outlets below and away from fish tanks?

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

why would there be a big bang?, the only current path was a to n/e through circuit protection and underwater.

all that happened was i was taking a hob filter off my 8ft and the cord tangled and pulled the power board up and into my nearly empty QT tank.

I've had the big bang Its scary. First thought is "am I dead?" and second and somewhat scarier is "OMG! my filters! my pumps! my lights! are they dead?"

Dan, you are a tradie yeah? Can't recall what sort, but is this your area? I am now really nervy about getting zapped around my tanks, something like that would freak me out!

I velcroed my powerboard to the inside leg of my stand, works well and makes drip loops possible

(don't tell anyone this) but at the LFS i used to work at, we had 33w brightstrips above our tank that the mounts on were getting kind of old, and a few would regularly give way, and if the top wasn't on the tank, would fall straight into the tank. I'd just grab 'em, shake 'em off and put 'em back up, still lit. Lucky that i didn't get Bzzzzt'ed

I do not recommend being as dumb as i was, you might get hurt. Granted, that's what circuit breakers and GFCI's are for, but i wouldn't want to test them.

I once had a clip lamp fall into the turtle pond while I was out (consequently I couldnt recommend them) and the turtles ate it. They werent electrecuted, but I got a hell of a jolt , just foolishy thinking "OMG, I must save them!" grabbed the light and threw it across the room . I actually had steam come off a couple of fingertips. Thankfully gits are indestructible . So it seems are turtles. Something with wings and a halo had their back that night.

They just both looked at me like - "you freak!".

Lesson learned, even cunning ninja skills dont beat electricity, but having a thick skull helps

yeah im a sparky , and i believe that no one should have a fish tank plugged in without it being on a safety switch. my pic is a perfect example, your first instinct is to get whatever fell in the tank out again. most times the fish will be fine even if the tank is live, but as soon as you touch the water and give the electricity somewhere else to go your in trouble.
fuses dont help you , they are there to stop the cable melting and starting a fire , you need a safety switch to protect people.
