The Monterey Bay Aquarium is excellent. I go there at least three times a year.

It's not a typical aquarium though... True to its name, it only features wildlife from off the California Coast. Not that you'll be disappointed though - the California Coast is one of the richest marine environments on Earth and we have many endemic species. There are a few tropical marine tanks, but they are in the kids' section because they'll complain if they don't see Nemo and Dory.

Also, the jellyfish exhibit is truly a wonderful sight to behold.

My wife and I are going to my Aunts house. I never thought it was so boring there. I grew up there and I always found something to get into (usually trouble)

I'm from San Jose!

Don't know why you're coming here though. It is so boring here. There is NOTHING to do, especially for the 10th biggest city in the states!

What? What? Colts suck?

Seriously, though, you gotta come down here...the zoo and wild animal park are awesome.

I live in SF! Hehe!

Stores you'd have to go to:

Ocean Aquarium
120 Cedar St., San Francisco
tel 415.771.3206

Mainly plants, but they have some ca/sa and tang cichlids. I dont recall any malawians or such though. Great displays

Aqua Forest
1718 Fillmore, San Francisco
tel. 929.8883

New aquarium thats VERY modern and clean. You should really check this out, but carry a baton in your pants cause it's in fillmore street *cough cough*. The store is based around planted tanks, with framed, nice quality, amano tanks on the walls.

I also work at a small store called Lucky Ocean Aquarium. We mainly have saltwater/cichlids, nearly no plants.

Will you be travelling outside of SF? If so, which cites?

Highly recommend stopping by Ghiradelli Square in SF. Get a nice sundae You can make a meal of it. Ocean Aquarium is a very nice LFS. I finally got my compact flourescents there! As for other good eating you can find excellent clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls all over around Fishermen's Wharf.

Well, it is a couple hours drive down, but try to go see the Moneterey Bay Aquarium. It is world-renowned, and you'll have lots of fun. In SF, there is a tiny store called Ocean Aquarium. It has a fantastic selection of fish, so even if you won't be buying anything, you'll have fun. I've seen jellybean tetras, show guppies from Japan, halfmoon bettas, Altum angels, etc. It is on 120 Cedar Street. It's on a tiny alley, and is pretty beaten up, but it's worth it. SF also has the Steinhart aquarium. I'm not quite sure where it is now, since it's been moving around while they rebuild something. Something like that. Last time I checked it was sharing room with the California Academy of Science I think. It isn't all that great anyways, but if you have a day off and don't feel like doing too much driving, go ahead.

You could see Alcatraz, the famous prison/island. Take a cable car ride. There some museums in SF, like the Museum of Modern Art. You could check out what's going on at the Moscone Center also. The SF Zoo is really great, and lots of fun if you like taking pictures. The San Francisco Ballet is performing the Nutcracker right now at the War Memorial Opera House.

If you feel like driving, Yosemite National Park is not too far away. It is breathtaking. That's where Ansel Adams got many of his famous pictures. A little closer are the redwoods. There are quite a few state parks relatively close to SF.

Remember that it gets pretty cold (at least by my stnadards) in SF. The sea air and the fog get chilly. Don't forget to pack a waterproof, warm, jacket.

While you're here, feel free to visit the LFS where I work. It's called Northbay Aquatics, and while it's about 40 miles north of San Francisco, we have some pretty cool stuff. Also, we are loacated in the "wine country" (Sonoma County and very close to Napa as well), you may want to visit a few wineries while you're up there.

In case you're interested, the address is:

8492 Gravenstein Hwy
Cotati, CA 94931

(We're right off Highway 101, one of the main highways in the Bay Area, so it's hard to miss)

Find "Albany Aquarium". It's actually a store specilizing in planted tanks. Supposedly has some of the best aquascapes outside of Japan. They grow their own plants and have some really hard to find stuff at resonable prices.
