Hi Kelly & Keith,
Yes, it was a surprising October snow for many.
Now is the time (each year) that the younger working
folks who purchased their SUV's discover the real truth
about their vehicles. "Four wheel drive, means FOUR WHEEL
SLIDE." Each fall, with the first couple of "real" snow
storms, many wind up in ditches or stuffed under trucks
or impact welded to others.

I was born and reared in upstate New York. Greece NY, where
we have "Lake Effect" snows. Depths of 48-102 inches is
normal as the winds whip across Lake Ontario and then drop
their moisture within the first few miles of shore line.

Out here, a mile or more high, we have had over night
storms deposit 12 inches of snow by 6AM and by noon it's
melted (due to the intensity of the sun). With temperatures
in the teens, I've watched the snow melt off pavement
exposed to the sun.

Here, we get a week or two of winter followed by another
week or two of spring like weather with the temps in the
40s and sometimes 50s, followed by another pulse of winter.

We love the snow, enjoy hiking in it, and working in it.
It beats the heck out of temperatures in the 80s and 90s+.
That's why we purchased several acres at 10,000 feet and
built our home. It's quiet, calm, and very peaceful.
Our nearest neighbor is more than a mile away, and yet we
have frequent visits by deer, elk, moose, brown bear, lynx,
coyote, and even a mountain lion.
There is no mail delivery and we have to drive 30 minutes
over packed dirt/gravel mountain road to the nearest town
(Como, CO pop 200) to our free, government provided post
office box. Groceries are an hour drive away in Fairplay,
or Conifer, or, we can splurge and drive into the outskirts
of Denver (nearly a two hour trip).

The only draw back is Autumn and the time when the leaves
all turn. Then all the "flat landers" drive up into the
mountains, and OOH and AHHH at the fall colors. Once,
during the peak of the "leaf watching season" we started
into town on what is normally an hour and a half trip.
SIX hours later, we finally got to where we were going.
The Darned leaf watchers were driving along with their
video cameras sitting on their dashboards, looking forward,
filming the views as they crept along the roads. GRRR

Yeah, I guess you could say we were addled, or smart

Frank

Wow. I live about 20 minutes in any given direction from various members of my family (except for my brothers who live about 50 minutes away) and friends.

I have PLENTY of places to drive for groceries and other shopping "needs," and I receive my mail courtesy of the mail courier who places everything in my mailbox which sits right at the end of my driveway.

Now, I don't mind driving up to an hour away to various places, but I would go nuts if I had to drive an hour just to get mail and groceries! I like the peace and quiet of country life, but as a temporary getaway, not as part of everday life. I need malls! lol.

Frank, if you were to miss one year of fall leaves turning you'd understand why some people do that.

I've had my nose almost pressed to the glass since landing back here in the states. Gotta love those fall leaves and cool temps

Feel free to send some of that snow our way, adams hoping to get some in florida

^_^

Hi Ya'll,
Delenn, I understand that some folks like the city or
at the most, the suburbs. My brother and sister both
live within 25 miles of where we were brought up. Once
I looked up some fellow classmates and discovered that
with the exception of 50 folks, everyone (360) was still
living within the state (NY). To me, that's being trapped.
Susan and I have found that we enjoy the quiet, solitude,
and friendliness of the folks who live in the mountains.

Babelfish, Unless you are going to be in the northern
part, good luck with that!
I was stationed in Mayport FL (Jax area) and durned if it
didn't snow that winter! Saw huge dump trucks with plows
on the front in ditches all over. No one knew how to drive
in the snow!

Several acres away would be fine!
We have well water, so the tanks would be great for
livebearers, african rifts, and shrimp!
We could trade plants etc.

There's no one on FP from the area that is into plants.
I just harvested over 10 pounds (wet) of wisteria and
tossed it into the trash.

Hi Nate!

Long time no hear! Hope everything is going well for you
as well. Susan is undergoing back surgery to fuse L3 to
L2 this afternoon. After that, we hope things settle down
for her (and us).

Those temperature changes are one of the reasons we so
throughly enjoy Colorado. It beats the heck out of the
winters in Upstate NY along the shores of Lake Ontario.
When I was growing up in that area, the roads did not
change back to black until June when the rains finally
washed all the salt off the roads.
