Funfair or fete stallholders who give goldfish as prizes to children under 16 could be jailed for up to a year under new animal protection laws.
The same sentence would apply to pet shop keepers who sell animals to under-16s unless an adult is present.

The Government's Animal Welfare Bill also imposes new regulations on pet owners to take 'reasonable steps to ensure welfare' of their animals.

From next year it would be an offence - with a possible jail term of up to a year and/or a £5,000 fine - to fail to provide a cat, dog, rabbit or other family pet with a 'suitable environment, a suitable diet, the ability to express normal behaviour, the need to be housed with or apart from other animals, and freedom from pain, suffering, injury and disease'.

depends if you can get a scientist to say it'll grow to the size of the tank, or if ignorance is a valid defence in that case.

Good rules, I'd like to hear about how they go enforcing them If you find anything on it later Robby, can you keep us updated? ta

My topic has now been transfered here.

Thank you for all that info, after reading it I faintly remember hearing that recently.

They said activists have no hope of doing certain things I think if you look back you will find actually how much they have done. This does not mean I agree or disagree with some of their activities, it is a matter of fact that they are there speaking their opinions and getting some actions.

I really hope this is as far as it goes. Some groups, like PETA, don't want us to keep animals at all.

I'll do graffiti,

I wouldnt want people not to be able to keep animals, but this new legislation seems like a good idea to me. Deaths due to fish bowls , fairground prizes etc probably number in the millions. Its about time something was done.In fact it should have been done thirty years ago.

If the general population didnt act like monkeys and actually looked after their pets properly then groups like peta would have less credibility.

I applaude moves that ensure people have a legal responsibilty towards minimum care requirements of their animals.
