You hang out and trade fish.

Pretty much, but it can be with any hobby/topic.

A group of people in the same hobby/interest get together in a centralized location, hang out, go to lunch and trade ideas/products etc. It can be a fish meet, cars, computers, etc etc.

I'm not talking about hobby/fish just a swap meet. It seems to imply...something. At least that is the feel I get when it is mentioned in dialogue in films. They say someone goes to the swap meet then laugh/jeer.

swap meets aren't funny... must be you folks got too much sun or something

My experience with swap meets is like an open market. Take one gigantic lot, fill it with vendors, stir in cheap prices, and you have a swap meet.

The ones where I live get really crowded as people look for all kinds of wares. I also believe that you don't really need a business license or anything like that, so one could also consider a swap meet just a large garage sale (My friend's daughter went there just to sell all her stuffed animals).

If people laugh/jeer at swap meets, it might be because they are considered "low class" shopping areas, since there's hardly a brand-name to be found (you won't find Louis Vuitton at a swap meet here). Yet I know many local businesses that started out at swap meets and built themselves up to own warehouses.

If there's another meaning behind swap meet, maybe I don't want to know it.

Also known as Flea Markets. Kinda like a couple dozen yard sales all under one roof. I love swap meets
