Hello all.
I am coming to that point in my high school education where it is time to take the ACT/SAT, find your major, find your college, etc. I was just wondering what is the best way to go if you are seriously thinking about working with aquariums/fish. Here are the options in my state(yes, it has to be in state)
Mansfield,PA- Fishery science-check out their website for the program, looks really nice.
Freshwater/Marine Biology
Is there any other science i should be looking for?
I am particulary interested in wanting to work with tropical freshwater fish. 2 dreams of mine would be

1-Study fish in their natural habitat whether its in South america, India or Africa.
2-Research loaches and discover their reproductive cycles.

Thanks in advance for the replies, i will thank you all again when i become a master fish guy.

You may want to think of a Wildlife Conservation or similar major. Or perhaps even a double major.

BTW, for the most part, you could go for just Biology without the specificity of marine biology as undergrad and do the more specific marine biology work during your graduate studies.

I might not be the best person to talk about it since I'm still in the thick of going through college.

Fishery Science is probably going to be right up your alley. We have Fisheries at Purdue, and I hang out with the "fishheads" a lot because I'm in Wildlife and we have a lot of the same classes.

My parents won't let me leave PA either

Good luck with your major, I was considering Freshwater/Marine Biology but its not one of those career where you get a job right away or make decent money right off the bat.

ETA: Have looked in the South Eastern part of PA? There are a lot of colleges around here and one of them may have something for you.

I have been out of College for years and I still don't know what my major is. Good Luck!!

While you are searching for the right school, ask about study abroad programs... a semester away that will let you travel and see things you wouldn't normally get to study on your own.

***What about Allegheny? It's about an hour from Pittsburgh. I don't know what kind of wildlife or Environmental classes they offer but I know it's a good school. I have a cousin graduating from there in May and she all raves about it.

Well, money is a matter, so Allegheny would be out of the issue.
As I said before -
Mansfield University- Fishery Science , I have posted the link for the front page of the fishery science now for everyone considering a fish field

http://www.mansfield.edu/fisheries/

Clarion University- Freshwater/Marine biology

-Both are pretty cheap in means of todays colleges( both are approx. $13,000 a year and in PA.
Maybee i will get to see some felow Fishprofile people in Fall 2007.
