I have one of those laminate (I think ), put-it-together-yourself shelving units that are usually found at Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

It's now sitting empty so I want to move it into my bedroom, but the 5g Mini-bow that's already in there on top, and use the other shelves for fish books & such.

I cleaned up nicely but I'm asking all you creative people: is there something easy I can do to it so it's not so white? My first thought was sponge painting...would that work, and if so what kind of paint?

And other ideas would be very much appreciated.

You could do faux marble, its pretty easy and comes in kits with different color choices. I did a bathroom vanity once and it came out nice.

First off you'll need to sand it down to get anything to stick to it.....

Next...sponge painting IME gives a harder line....I prefer ragging, either method usually takes two to three colors. If you havent got paint you might shoot for the smaller "sample" colors from sherwin williams or benjamin moore. I've not seen faux finish in anything smaller than a 1 gallon container though...ratio ranges from 3:1 to 4:1 clear to paint. sorry it was :%)...late for leaving work.

Getting the paint to stick to it would be extremly difficult.

There is now a prepaint that you can put on glass before it is painted but I believe it is extremly costly. this might work

If it is a pull down unit it can be relaminated but this requires several trade skills and trade tools.

The easy way would be to sell it or use it elsewhere and buy another one in the finish you require.

There are also some stick on sheets that can be used again and a big BUT if not done correctly it can look a shocker.

Just give it a good sand with wet/dry sand paper before you paint it.

I painted some melamine snake cages by doing that last weekend.

Like Keigth mentioned you can get a product that you paint on before hand, but it's pretty expensive (over here anyway).

I'd just build some new shelves.

spraypaint.

Easy to apply, hard-wearing and a tendancy to stick to anything
Give it a light sand first to rough it up a little and then spray away
