i am fairly new to the hobby and found my LFS to be most un helpful i find it best never to ask questions like;

"which is best or "what should i get because the first thing they do.................
give you the most expensive option in the shop and tell you that your 5 liter goldfish bowl with no filtration or heat will house it!!

honest some are that bad in the uk

Welcome to the world of LFS's. Almost all LFS have to take into account the fact that they are a small business that needs to make a profit. Don't hold it against them too much, I just prepare for a visit by buffing up on my knowledge before walking in the door...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I usually try and save the really cool/unusual/expensive fish for people that I know are advanced hobbyists.

A person who is still beginning in the hobby is going to be just as happy with a common bristlenose as they would be with an extremely rare species, so why would I waste my time trying to sell it to someone that won't be able to appreciate it fully? That's the way I see it anyway.

Some beginning aquarists often want to buy the expensive stuff right away, but if I feel like they don't really know what they are doing, I will talk them into getting some cheaper and more common fish to "practice" with.

It's often but not always the case. There are both good and bad lfs, including the chain stores.

One incident that happened to me that I still laugh about was being told I could add a rope fish to my 20g

That's why the best advice for anyone keeping fish is to do lots of research
