I would say-not nuts in my opinion, but personally i dont. i mean could you honestly tell one neon apart from the other in a schoal of 10?! i think not. but with fish such as convict cichlids etc etc that are easier to tell apart, i think i would.

I don't name my fish, and I don't really get attached to them besides a select few.

i had joke names for mine that were just ridiculous (like "Oreo Lightening Bolt" for a zebra danio). but as they died off, i didn't name the replacements because i don't wanna get too attached.

my only original i have left is a goldfish that had a big black splotch on its forehead when i got him so i named him "the dud". the dud doesn't have his splotch anymore, but i can't get rid of him and i'd feel bad if he died because of sentimental value... y'know... he was my first fish, after all.

My larger fish (aka longer-lived) all have names. The smaller dither fish (eg. zebra danios) do not. My daughter was heartbroken after naming our otto's, which didn't live very long. :-(

So what sort of names are out there?

My clown loaches are Jumper, King, Hummer, Slim, Tiny Tim, Sheba, and Seven. My son's Goldfish are Forcefield and Light Saber. My daughter's betta is Sapphire and her chinese algae eater is "China" -- imagine that :-) Oh, the pleco's are Dotty (my tank) and George (son's).

Lfs guy told me i was nuts cause fish can dye to easy to get attacted to them by naming them.

He obviously bases that on his own fishkeeping skills (or lack thereof). Name away my friend...my screen name is the name of my 1st goldie from 2000 & still going strong!

Scuba is my name recommendation for the day

Some of mine have names :
Trevor and Phil male platys
Jools, Smith and Lemony female platys
Dora the Corydora
Coco and Krusty my latest additions - clown Plecs
Fraid the guppies and neons are nameless except for the flashiest male guppy who is called Flashman.

Last but not least - Leeroy the baby platy who was born in the bag in transit from the LFS. He has a habit of disapearing for days and we all get worried (he really is very small) in case he's been a breakfast. The first thing everyone says when they get up is and look in the tank is "Where's Leeroy, have you seen him today?"

I know some may not live forever but I would be sad if any died, whether they were named or not. I think naming them makes it more fun.

Yes I name most of mine too. It does make it a bit sad when you get a death but you need to know who you're talking to!

Fatty and Sneaky - black widows
Bertha and Sonny - Platys
Red, Yellow, Blue - male guppies
Foxy - female guppy
Starbuck & Apollo - Dwarf Gouramis
the Red Arrows - cherry barbs
The Wilfs (Big & Little) - BNs
Otis - Betta

as soon as we buy new fish we record them in a log book and name them all. they get names according to the type of fish. eg zebra danios get names beginning with z, gold danios get names beginning with g etc.

as far as i am concerned they are living therefore deserve a name. if they die it is always going to be sad as they are part of a family.

some of those are awsome names

glad im not the only one.

my larger pleco is Big L cause my gf hated me calling him a L147

jean is my gouramis with half his lip gone cause he looks like the former Prime Minster

George is my other gouramis just cause

my massive glowlight is skinny and the littlest one is fatz

other then that the other names havnt come for the fish. its kinda spur of the moment when talking about them. but in due time they will all have names.

haha no i wouldnt say that you are nuts. i used to name my fish but then when i got barbs that looked the same i kind of stopped cause i couldnt tell them apart. the guy at the lfs must not know how to keep fish if they "die to often to get attached" they can live for years, and some such as koi can outlive their owner if cared for properly

but again, i dont think you are nuts....either that or we are ALL a little nutty heh.
