first thing. here in the us, we live where we can afford to. and work where we have to. i myself cant afford to live where i work. i cant afford a 150,000 house and have to drive 70 miles a day 4 days a week.

and 2nd. the government can only do whats within their power. they cant control businesses who run things their way.
as far as my shopping. everything from grocery to LFS, i go to is within 4 miles.

what we need is the people of the world (LOL big joke) to unite against big business to change things. but this will never happen because people will always put individualism first before anything else. except in times of disaster. which its sad to say, as a movie that was just made and put on FX. its going to take a major incident to change things.

IMO anyway

btw, its not my world, i'm just visiting :%)

why are newer vehicles getting worse mpg averages then older cars?

because the US government sets fuel economy standards which expire after a few years and then renewed (or not ). if not, then the fuel economy goes down significantly in the year after it expires. also, a company like honda puts their stock in hybrid technology instead of the traditional internal combustion, so their "normal" engines have worse economy compared to the hybrid, even though they know how to make a "normal" engine that gets the same mileage as the hybrid one

I'm driving a 2001 pontiac grand am, getting roughly 20-25mpg in the city.

It all depends on how you drive, and automatic cars generally get slightly worse fuel economy than manual vehicles.

Although, talking to a dealer here, most people on average that drive grand ams around dallas get about 15-16mpg in the city, so i'm doing better.

as for gas prices - i was going to fill up today at 2.19, but i thought it was too expensive

i moved to the outskirts of tucson because i could not afford a house in town. i own a wonderful 3 bedroom house on almost 2 acres with a reasonable mortage.

however- i gave up a 400 hp pontiac gto and a 280zx because their mpg average sucked. both were cool cars- but no big loss. the gto ran on regular gas, which is no longer available. the 280zx was not too bad, but a 2 seat sports car with kids does not seem logical.

my current work vehicle is a 1993 5 speed saturn sl1 that consistantly gets 39 mpg. my 1994 neon gets about 30 mpg. my brother in law is driving a similar year festiva that gets around 45 mpg. i cannot ride a bike or use the bus.

why are newer vehicles getting worse mpg averages then older cars?

I agree to a certain extent, however, you have to remember that political issues (I won't go any further in depth because politics is apparently forbidden here) between suppliers and consumers also plays into the price bracket range.

I would more than willingly (not trying to start a fight here) walk or ride a bike, or do public transportation to my new jobbut I really don't see me making it the 75 miles round trip and I can't afford to live where the school is locatedso I'll stay with my $400/month rent and drive...for biking I'd get killed in Houston for thinking about it during rush hour, and public transportation is only for those going and working in downtown...so I have to drive, and I do shop locally...just about a mile from the house...heidi

I don't drive, not allowed with the meds I am on right now because they make me a bit silly and my reaction time is really bad. Maybe I'll be able to in a few years.

The problem for me is that the public transit system here absolutely sucks to go anywhere other than the shopping mall that's just a 5 min. drive down the street from me. Even going there, buses run only every 1/2 hr even during rush hour and I live on one of the main streets here. I live a 1 hr drive from Toronto but if I want to get to the GTA by bus it will take close to 3 hours or $80 or so to go by train. I'm not really in a rural area, I live in a city of about 80,000. Even going to the next closest city, Hamilton with about 500,000 people that takes maybe 20 mins. by car takes an hour and a half by bus or $60 by train. I think instead of complaining about gas prices we should all be rallying to get public transit that people will actually want to use. Wouldn't that be a novel idea. For now if I want to go anywhere I usually beg someone for a ride but if public transit was better I would definitely take that even if I could drive. I would also like to see public transit made more friendly to people with disabilities around here.

When I was living in Ottawa it was great, they are supposed to have one of the best public transit systems in the world and I really liked it. They have a designated bus-only transitway and a light rail train that makes getting from place to place in the city REALLY fast. Even going from Hull/Gatineau in Quebec to Ottawa and back is easy and pain free. A lot of people actually use it because it is cheaper than driving and you actually get to your destination faster with it most of the time, especially if you are close to the transitway. I would love to see public transit like that in other cities. Almost all of the buses were equipped for people with wheelchairs and disabilities, it was rare to see one that wasn't and there was no cost for people in wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, etc. and only $2 or so regular price for unlimited rides for about 3 hours.

Anyway enough ranting, gas here is $0.965 CAD / litre..... about $3.03 USD / gallon, about the cheapest you are going to find anywhere in the province. Other places are paying over $1.00 CAD / litre or more. Personally I don't mind if gas prices for public consumers go up for the same reason that tiny mentioned. On the other hand I am more concerned about things like pollution and climate change than anything else. At this point I think people need to start getting that the effects of pollution are affecting them NOW and will continue to do so in THIS lifetime. I don't mean to be alarmist but we all need to start facing the music and realize that people are dying from the emissions produced by our gas guzzling vehicles and take some responsibility. It is no longer a problem that your children or grandchildren will have to deal with after you are gone, it's your problem. It is easy to sit back and say that one person alone isn't going to change anything but if everyone starts adjusting even just a little bit, the effects are really amazing.

[/rant]

Sorry this is one topic that hits close to home for me. My grandma has emphysema and asthma and seeing the trouble she has with breathing on a smoggy day is really heart wrenching and to be honest it makes me really angry. She's 67 and in amazing shape, extremely active and in excellent health for her age otherwise.

"There is no other way! I accept that and pay the petrol prices for that. I just object to people complaining about it endlessly!"

Amen to that. Though, ideally, I shouldn't be talking, as we do get gas comparitively cheaper here in America than other countries.

actually, the US government has set tax breaks for people who buy large SUV's like hummers and the bigger ones like ford expeditions. also, as long as those SUV's claim to be trucks, they are exempt from most emissions and fuel standards that the cars are required to follow. the government has also limited the funds used to explore alternate fuel like hydrogen fuel cells. so even though people will always think of themselves first, there is no reason to say the government is not able to do anything about the current level of gas consumption.

i know 99% of the people on this site are probably too young to remember (i barely remember and i'm not *that* old ), but in the 1970's the US made BIG, gas guzzling cars that were all about wasting fuel. then OPEC cut production and suddenly there was a shortage and people had to sit in line for hours in order to put gas in their cars. we are heading down that road once again, but this time there are plenty of fuel efficient alternatives to the big gas guzzlers. but it is still good to remember our past in order to not make the same mistakes as before.

I assume then, Tiny, that you don't drive a car?

Yes, I do. However, I only use it for those journeys which are impossible with current public transport. I am a student, and have to use my car to move out of my accomodation and bring my stuff home. There is no other way! I accept that and pay the petrol prices for that. I just object to people complaining about it endlessly!

With the way it was worded she definately could have taken it wrong, just don't want any misunderstandings I am really glad it was not meant that way.

I was provoking her? I was actually quite prepared to applaud her, as I attempt to bike anywhere I can if I have the chance. As a matter of fact, I only have my insurance set for a '98(?) quest which I, for obvious reasons, never use.

here in tucson az, i just filled up for $2.34 a gallon for regular unleaded. how much is gas in your neck of the woods? i commute 100 miles per day (round trip), so the cost is adding up.

i am really interested to hear about gas prices outside of the united states. higher or lower then us? what do your vehicles average per gallon?

Don't provoke her. She is advocating responsible use, and says so right in her post. Go to local stores instead of ones farther away etc. She is not saying give up your vehicle entirely.

Currently close to $2.43

I paid $350-$400.00 a month in gas usage last year commuting back and forth to work. I don't regret it a bit and I am certainly not whining. They will pry my truck from my cold dead grip as a friend of mine says it so well. As long as I do not complain, and am willing to pay the prices this is my choice

Have a nice day.
