is it like really bad pain, or just occasional like when it clicks? my knees have always done this, never got it checked out though, so let us know what your surgeon tells you ok?

*bump*

Months later...

New news.

I got an MRI.

I've been to "the top orthopedist on LI".

I'm in therapy 3-4x a week.

This is what we know:

I have a plika? in my knee.

It's a folded over patch of muscle in the protective bubble that surrounds your joint. They can be harmless, but mine got irritated, probably when I took that fall. This is what makes my clicking noise. Because of that, I started favoring my knee, which shut down lots of muscles and stuff. Now my patella cant go straight, it goes diagnol. *shrug*

Treatment can sometimes be therapy alone, it's usually arthroscopic surgery though. No biggie.

This has been the radiologists report, I'll have different news once my doctor calls.

>.<

Thanks Moonie. It still doesn't feel better but hopefully it'll get there soon.

What I realized after being at the doctor, is that I dont really just have a "clicky" knee like most of you folks were complaining about. My knee cap is actually out of place. I didn't realize till a little while ago that there is actually a difference and it sort of freaked me out.

well it sounds like you've got something that is gonna require some experimenting to get it right, and that doesn't sound like much fun... hope it works out for you

Me too.

The brace doesn't even stop the clicking. ] It just helps keep my knee cap slightly in place...but it's so bad that it cant really just stop it altogether.

In therapy, we'll be working to soften up the tendons and whatever on my left knee that are keeping things out of place. We'll try to break up anything that has maybe gotten trapped under my knee cap. Plus, we'll be working on strengthening my left quad, because when you have a knee issue like this, it starts to shut down, which contributes to the buckling of the knee. (Translation-why sometimes I randomly just fall )

My fingers are crossed too...

Okay, well I just got back from the doctor a little while ago...

After xrays and examination, he *thinks* it's ITBS...a syndrome with the Iliotibial Band.

I was fitted for a special brace to keep my knee cap from moving as much as possible. I'm stuck in it for a full 4 weeks...and then depending on how I feel, I can just wear it for sports/activities.

This will be with physical therapy prolly 2x a week. They will re-evaluate and treat me...(I've been going there since I was in 5th grade. )

Basically, something is making my petella pop and slide off track constantly.

If this doesn't clear up within a couple weeks/months, I have to go in for surgery to have it scoped and cleaned out.

Everybody, fingers crossed that it heals.

Not sure if you found out anything, but my daughter had the same problem. She kept saying it wasn't a big deal and didn't want to go to the doctor, she's a basketball player. Anyway a month later she completely ruptured her acl and had to have surgery. So just a little heads up!

I do wear my sneakers most of the time, and it's not like I just stopped for a long time, maybe one day out of the week I dont wear them, and now i'm having a problem? Over the summer I never wear sneakers, and this never happens. I'm puzzled, and still clicking. >.<

Dunno what your problem is Cally...I bet a knee specialist or an orthopedist would be able to tell you easily though.

erg. Mum has orthotics. She doesn't wear them and the knees go and the back goes, and she turns into a monster. Where ya shoes girly! I don't want an athletic monster, that would be bad! you could outrun anybody that was trying to escape your wrath!

Actually, you got my thinking last night...
I have flakey kneecaps that flick out of position and i have to move my leg back in exactly the same way that i took to get it there in order for the pressure to release and the bone to flick back.
Does anyone else have this and do you know what it is??

Update:

I spoke with my aunt a couple hours ago, who is a physical therapist.

She is pretty confident that the whole problem has to do with my arches (or rather, lack of arches, since I'm flat footed), and the fact that if I slack off wearing my sneakers w/ my custom orthodics...things just get messed up. So basically, my whole leg is just out of alignment. Dunno if that helps any of you guys.

If I'm still in a lot of pain throughout the weekend, I'll prolly have an appt. with my ortho on Monday.

hmm...

I hope I end up helping all of you.

My mom called my sports med orthopedist today. He couldn't fit me in since it wasn't really an emergency, and it's sort of a hike to get there. But he said to take ibupfrofen and keep icing it. By this he hopes any internal swelling will go down, allowing things to shift back into place I guess.

So it didn't really help. If it continues throughout the weekend, I'll have an appointment on Monday. Guess we're just going to have to wait this one out!

sounds to me like you have stretched something too far and its no longer holding bones in the right place. My entire family clicks, different joints, but thats what it is.

Mum had something similar that required an op, kneecap kept slipping due to loose/tight ligament combo. Grafted a bit of bone onto it, and removed the spurs it caused, and all is well.

Keep off it though, really. If it terns out to be ACL damage, you don't want to stress it out. That one will have you off gym work 6 months at the very least if you bust it.

my left knee does the same, though it is not painful, and it doesn't make a loud pop.

Ferretfish, my right knee has been doing something similar for the past seven years. It often swells and hurts as well, and I can't keep it one position for too long or it gets really stiff and painful. Also, the patella moves a lot more on the right knee than the left. Like you, I didn't have a specific injury or anything that started it, it just happened.

I had it checked out when it first started happening, had a few xrays and things, but none of the doctors I saw had an answer for me and many seemed to think it was psychosomatic (even though my knee sometimes swelled to twice its normal size). So I've never come to a conclusion or had any treatment, and it still gives me problems today (even more so after I was hit by a car and landed on my knees - they are still bruised six months later). So I too would be interested to hear what your surgeon says (he can just diagnose all of us at once )

i can crach my knees, and it hurts right afterward, kind of like cracking your knuckles, but on a larger scale. it's one of those things i should probably stop doing, but sometimes my knee locks and i have to pop it back to make it straighten out
