Ah, you learn from experience. I used to think people who had lots and lots of *stuff* on their garage shelves were really, really handy. Now I am dabbling in some DIY stuff I realise that perhaps some of it is the trial and error of getting the wrong thing!

Live and learn and laugh!

On the other hand the EUREKA moment of needing something you already have one of is unparalleled!!!

Being a tradie and a trade teacher there is no such thing as cheap tools they usually dont last and are made from poor quality material.

I am still using my trade tools bought about 1954 and many toos bought during late 1800s now that is quality.

Tools are useless unless you know how to use them safely.

i understand the point you are making but for tools that are only going to be used once in a while by a diyer cheap tools are great. but tools that earn money for you have to be good quality to achieve a professional finish and be reliable. i assume that you are a cabinetmaker and like to be very precise with all that you make, ie professional finish, but for most diyers cost is the biggest part of the equation.

People with lots of "stuff" in the garage could be handy or they might just be pack rats. My next door neighbor's garage is so full that the door wont close all of the way. Pack-ratitis is an insidious disease, almost as bad as MTS.

I admit i have some cheapies around the place. Things that I am unlikely to use again, and cannot borrow, I'll sometimes go for bottom of the range.
I try to go mid-range, but seeing as the OH is tool-phobic and wouldn't DIY if his life depended on it, sometimes they aren't high priority.

Does anyone else have 3 claw hammers??

I don't know how we did it, but somehow we have 3 claw hammers AND you can never find one when you need it!

I think I may have a screwdriver and a wrench somewhere. I guess thats the beauty of having a brother thats a carpenter and work with 9 other carpenters... I just whine a little and get stuff done.
