I listed some fish on AquaBid, pick-up only since I've never shipped fish before. This morning I received a question email about my auction, if I would ship and accept a money order for payment.

I've done a bunch of research on shipping and feel comfortable with that. My question is about payment: is it standard procedure to request that I receive the money order before I ship? And can I deposit or cash a money order at my bank?

Thanks...and fish-whack me if these are silly questions

I would not ship anything without payment, or expect any seller to do it. When I've bought plants online I had to pay in full via paypal before anything was shipped. Banks here will cash money orders, I would assume your banks would be the same. You'll know for sure if you call them and ask.

Ive never sold on aquabid but have on ebay many times. I would definately request that only Postal Money orders (if you arent using Paypal or someother online service) be sent. They are a lot less likely to be fake, also the post office will cash them.

edit: and like Tryst said, make sure you get payment before shipping

theresa - I accept postal money orders, and deposit them in the bank - only then will I send whatever it is when the check has cleared.

I generally make a note somewhere in the auction along the lines of :

Money Orders (postal), cashiers check are accepted, Item will only ship once payment has cleared - usually 5-7 business days.

Hope that helps.

what about paypal, i use it when i buy stuff off of online, and so far no problems on either end.

me, i wouldn't care if u took the money first and then send the item. just as long as it gets here.

I wouldn't mind doing PayPal, I use it to purchase, but I have to do more research. For some reason I think they take a percentage but I could be wrong.

They don't take a percentage if the person is funding the payment from the paypal balance or bank account. If they try to use a credit card you wont be able to accept it unless you upgrade your account. So, I generally just say I accept paypal (no credit cards).

I use paypal when selling on AquaBid and Ebay both. It takes the hassle out of almost EVERYTHING. You can even print shipping labels via paypal and have the cost taken directly out of your paypal account. It is the easiest and most secure way to go....

..... but thats just one simple mans opinion.

I'll probably be selling and shipping in the future too, at least plants and snails, whatever I can't sell locally.

You can also make direct payments to people thru your bank website, a few clicks to set it up.. Receiving payment just as easy..

The pain part - having to weigh stuff using scales to determine shipping costs in advance, weight of packaging included... I don't have scales.. Nor know what type I need.

Small cuttings or moss or snails in a ziplock with a few drops of water into a small bubble envelope not hard though.

I thought both Ebay and Aquabid took small percentages of the sales, not paypal....

Aquabid itself is 100% free to use. Paypal keeps a percentage, and if you sell on ebay you have to pay to do it. (approx $0.50 per listing) Then, if your item sells (on ebay) they keep roughly 2% of the final sell price.
