Quicksand is caused by an oversaturation of sand or fine soil from water rising up through it.

Here is a diagram showing how it happens. It is from [link=this]http://science.howstuffworks.com/quicksand1.htm" style="COLOR: #FFFF80[/link] site.

Under normal circumstances, you can't be sucked completely under by quicksand. It is denser than the human body, so at some point you will float. The reason it is hard to get out of is that you are working against a vacuum, just like pulling your feet from mud. [/font]

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Well you could drown if you don't know how to swim. But it doesn't suck you under like in the movies.

Actually you can't drown. Like said earlier it is denser than we are, so we would float before we went under I saw this on myth busters once too and they floated at chest level

they say that if you find yourself sinking into quicksand, that the best thing to do is to try to go into a floating position and try to float your way out of it. assuming you've made it to a point where your only option is to float out of it i guess....

They say you can drown in an inch of water So if you tried (or maybe passed out in it?), I'm sure you could drown in quicksand too.

Well, sure if you stuck your face into it and inhaled; but by merely standing there, nothing will happen to you.
