Anyone have info on these tiny little hamsters? I'm having trouble finding much good info. I saw them in a petstore years ago and really wanted some but couldn't get them then. They looked like tiny little hyperactive balls of fluff. Sooo cute . Most importantly I need to know if they make much noise when playing or arguing with each other. I had to leave my campbells dwarf hamsters behind because in the middle of the night they'd start a wrestling match and one made horrible screeching noises. My boyfriend just couldn't stand it so my sister took them. Mostly all the info I've found is overall dwarf hamster info and practically nothing specificaly on robos.

any how should stop now! I was going to get hamster, but now it looks like I could be moving so I can't! there was a really good website that I can't find but will have another look, here in the UK Robos are some times hard to get hold of, not easy to tame so not popular as pets.

good Luck

Robos aren't too common here either but I might have a source for a nearby breeder and they show up in petstores every so often. They don't make good kids pets being so difficult to handle and most adults I know don't want to keep hamsters just for themselves so petstores have trouble selling them. Being active and hyper may make them hard to handle but they are so much fun to watch in a good sized cage. Cute little fluff balls bouncing around. I have a 3'x 2' area they can occupy when I figure out how to make an escape proof cage for something so tiny.

Get rats far more entertaining and intelligent and just as cute honest!!

sorry my bias shows up !!1

Also becareful sometimes groups can fight - i *think* its best to keep them in odd numbers??

but check that I could be wrong.....(it happens!)

GFG

edited to add - aren't they often confused with campbells? and if they made noise I am fairly sure robos would as well VERY similar????

I know campbells and winter whites are quite similar and can even hybridize but I thought robos were a bit more distantly related and found in other areas of the world. There are a couple sites that mix up robos and winter whites saying they are the same thing when they really aren't. Winter whites are hard to tell from campbells whereas robos are half the size or less, have a different shape, and some differences in attitude. I can find lots of detailed info on campbells, winter whites, and chinese, but the robos usually just get a passing mention on their size and that they are the most social and active of the dwarf hamsters. More details such as any specific foods(food size), noise they make, social interactions, and potential cage setup differences from other dwarf hamsters would be useful.

I already have 8 guinea pigs covering over 30sq ft in cages so I want something quite a bit smaller than be kept quite a few to 1 cage. I'm also not that interested in interacting with and holding them. What I liked most about my gerbils was building interesting cage designs and then watching them play. What I dislike about my campbells is no matter how many toys I give them they only give it a passing glance and then go to sleep or beg for food.

This is the most specific thing I could find. good grief I am just queen of the links tonight!

http://www.centralpets.com/animals/mammals/rodents/rod4098.html

http://www.hamsterland.com/default.asp?cat=lin&con=0
(page of links some kinda childish but one called Hamster tunnel I remember being good?)

http://www.petplanet.co.uk/small_breed_profile.asp?sbid=17

what about this as a USA contact (sorry have no idea where you live!)
http://www.helenslittlecritters.com/index.htm

When I was looking here I phoned loads of petshops and supposed breeders and found out some stuff, although I think in general the lack of info is just because no one wants them as typical pets? here pet shops mix up all kinds of hamsters.

The most useful info I got from a breeder was to build a cage with many levels and tunnels(clear for viewing) and move their food around to encourage them to explore more. It was also important to have many nesting areas to make sure if there were fights each hamster had its own place, although she did say her mostly stayed together to sleep. they ate normal hamster food and veg like carrots as a treat. You had to be careful with wheels because really they are so small its possible for them to shoot off them and injure them selves, best to have a filled in wheel and slow it down some how. she used puzzle type toys like see saws and rope bridges instead of wheels.

I bet when you get them they will have a great time in their specially designed cage!
hope that helps.

GFG
