OK, all you easily grossed-out people to whom this is TMI, look away!

I dropped a dish on my toe.

Right on the cuticle.

It hurt like crazy.

It went black. A few weeks ago i discovered that the black (blood) went from the nail bed diagonally through my toenail to the surface.

today, half of the top of my toenail came away from the nailbed. I cut it off to avoid it getting snagged on things and tearing the remainder off (i figured that'd really hurt a lot!)

what should i do to ensure good nail growth now i only have half a nail on the left side?

i had the same thing happen to me, only i lost the whole nail instead of only half. just let it grow back, make sure your new nail doesn't get ingrown too badly otherwise it will hurt a lot worse later. your new nail may end up growing under (or over) the nail that's still there. this may complicate the healing process so be aware of the new growth.

Hi,
Susan dropped a can on her big toe. Like you (probably) she
turned the air blue with words only a sailor would/should
know. The toe changed colors, and after a couple of days
of pain, finally decided that I might know best (ex-EMT) and
went to the foot doctor. Because she is a diabetic, she
goes to the local "Diabetic Foot and Wound Center."
He removed the entire nail, carefully protected it, and in
time a new nail grew in place. It had a "dimple" in it
where the can had hit but it looks "interesting."

Go to the Dr's and have the toe taken care
of(professionally)...
Frank

at least you didn't kick an "empty" box

Mine finally fell off (kicked the box in November), and with the help of an absurdly ]:| student who was mean came off in May (May was a bad month)...

Just let it grow, and if need be since you still have half a toenail keep it protected (bandaid?)...and like has been mentioned be sure the new toenail doesn't grow in over or under the remainder of the old toenail...

Or do as Frank suggests and go see a doctor...

a bandaid is probably not a good idea cause you want your toe to be able to breathe properly. when i smashed my toes, i was told to soak in salt water, but since it's been a few weeks that is probably not a good thing anymore. best thing, imho, would be to get rid of the rest of the nail if you can. otherwise just wait it out and it will grow back in a few months time.
