well i found out not too long ago that one of the other guys at work put in his notice that he was leaving soon. don't know if they'll bring me back, but if they do i may work it until one of my resumes works out for me. since i was hired "at will" then i can leave whenever i want. so if something much much better comes along then i will definitely jump at the chance to do it, especially since they have shown very little incentive for me to feel loyal to them.

I know exactly how you feel Moondog - the same thing happened to me twice. The first time I was working as a casual sales and admin assistant at a shop when I was 18, I worked there for 8 months and everything was going well, but it was a quiet shop with not a huge amount of business most of the time, so I wasn't overly surprised when they told me that there wasn't enough work to support my position anymore. A few days later, i started the search for a new job and, just like you, saw my old job advertised, but requesting a 'junior aged 15-17'. So, really, their plan was to hire someone younger than me (I was just about to turn 19 as well) so they could pay them lower wages to do the same work. I was really upset, because it was a smallish business and I had a lot of friends there, I also got along with the bosses very well and couldn't understand them lying to me like that (well, I can really, since it would have been illegal to fire me on the basis of my age).

I got a new job not long after that, this time as a casual admin assistant at an even smaller, home-based business. Worked there for about 6 months, got along well with the other staff members, did my job well. Out of the blue, the admin manager called me on a day off and told me that since it was coming up to their slow sales period, they couldn't foresee there being enough work to keep me on at that time. So, I went back to the job adverts to search again, and lo and behold - once again, my job was advertised, with the stipulation of a 'junior trainee 15-17'. ]:|

The first time it happened, i let it go, but the second time I confronted my boss with an email about how I had thought that we had a relationship of mutual respect, but obviously I was wrong. I didn't mention the words 'unfair dismissal laws' but i'm pretty sure the thought was running through his head. He called me and apologised immediately, and I left it at that, but I was still angry about it for quite a while afterwards.

In the end, though, if I had still been working at that job I never would have been searching for another one - which means I would never seen or applied for my first editorial job which, essentially, was the best thing that ever happened to me and put me on the path I'm on now . So in the end, I chose to see it as one of those 'everything happens for a reason' kind of things. Hopefully this situation works out in the end for you too, Moondog, though in the meantime you have every right to be angry at your employers for doing this - it's just so sneaky and underhanded.

In my (limited) experience, it's usually the small companies who behave worse than the big ones!

I'm p*ed off about work too atm, I feel your pain

Good luck down the JobCentre - and wish me luck at mine

i've thought about that keith, but i don't want anything to do with a place like that. if they feel that they need to get rid of me, i'd just as soon stay away from them. i was much more willing to go back before i saw that they are advertising for my position again.

tiny, this company only had 12 employees, counting me, so it had nothing to do with benefits. they actually had a very nice benefits package, which i did not have to pay for at all, they just have a very amateur way of approaching their business practices. one of the other employees called it "shoot from the hip" management. basically they have this habit of making quick decisions and living with the consequences later. the only upside to this is that i am eligible for unemployment insurance until i find something else.

Why dont you reapply for the job using another name and see what they have to offer.

If it's anything like the UK, they're doing it to get rid of you before you become entitled to worker protection and benefits.

Look at it this way, if they're going to behave like that, then it's much better you got out after 7 weeks than got tied into the company and were s*at on after a few months, once you'd got bens, possiblte student loan contribs, pension, etc sorted out with them.

I'm sure summat will come up soon, and with a much better company which doesnt exploit legal loopholes like that]
